Memory Boosters?

They're evil. Buy a locking case and no one will boost your memory Just kidding.

What are memory boosters?

Their some kind of programs that clean up your memory.

Like Memturbo or Rambooster. I don't use them. The programs themselves claim to increase computer performance.

I think they can play a part in optimizing your system though some do tend to have trade offs. Almost all of them will allow you to run the app TSR in the system tray so you can reclaim and or defrag your memory as needed. I wouldn't let it just optimize memory automatically because it might lend to application instability in some cases...

I run FreeRAM XP. It works in the background. If my resourses drop below 30% it frees up memory. I love it, works like a charm.

freeram xp seems to work well

i used to use freeram xp, but stopped a little while back. I haven't noticed any difference in the speed of my system or anything else for that matter

Travis freeram xp only frees ram when it gets low. Not supposed to make it run faster, just free up memeory when it gets low.

oh. well that explains why I don't notice anything, I manually free my memory by turning off programs I don't use, or i go to sleep and forget about my worries.

I guess it does. i personally have my freeRAM set to free up when I reach only 30 megs of memory left. I have never got that low.

Especially after installing a freash stick of 128 bringing my total to 256.

I use tweak xp to make the system run faster as well.

Maybe but it only sucks down 2 megs by itself so why bother. And I like knowing how much is free (it tells me in the sys tray)

And anyways, I am not one of those people that goes out of their way to make sure nothing is sucking down memory here and there. Who cares?

free ram sucked up more for me, and with the negligible difference just shutting it off made sense. Also I don't like the way it saves memory it moves it to the page file. That slows down things a bit if you use the same program multiple times. I try to keep my page file use down.

yeah it makes better sense than using sysmetrix. I can't fit sysmetrix into my sys tray as easyly.

actually short of runing a ram defrager your not freeing up all of the ram and closing a program does not always remove all dll's from memory...


RAM is actually allocated in a similar fashion that is used with psychical drives with there being allocation units and sectors and it is a case where fragmentation does affect performace and the total amount of free ram ready for application use, defraging and recovery also deals with applications that bleed in memory returning ram which is not being used which is marked as being used in that instance...

anyway....

I've used a few different programs and never stuck with rnning one at all times until I came across System Mechanic... which does full system maintanence including memory optimization, another app I run on a couple of systems is TaskInfo2003 which recovers system resources when told to, it also allows you to see exactly what is runing and much more info than most will have any idea of the need to have until the point they need to have it ...

it depends on what kind of progs your running as well as how much ram u have.i have 1.2 gig 2700 ddr ive never gotten close to running out of ram.. the best thing ram boosters are used for is freeing ram if u use a prog that has a memory leak ..they also help if u run large progs and have a small amount of ram .. but i went in to my pc settings and shut off any running service that wasent needed... that freed up more ram than i ever use and it freed up cpu cycles as well....
