Paraphrasing as best I can he said "Saddam will receive the justice that he denied so many others." The trial is expected to be held in Iraq, as Iraq is now a free and sovereign nation. This will not mark the end of terror which must continue to be fought "cell by cell." But it certainly is an important event and means that Iraq will not return to Saddamist rule. As Prime Minister Tony Blair so eloquently put it "It removes the shadow that has been hanging over them for too long of the nightmare of a return to the Saddam regime. This fear is now removed." Be aware that you are witnessing history. It is a great day.

I also think that the death penalty is the wrong way to go, no matter how sever the crime. The death penalty is murder. Period. Saddam should be locked away in prison, with every other prisoner wanting to kill him. The death penalty is not only wrong, but it is an easy way out for a man who murdered millions of his OWN PEOPLE.

As someone who has lost a loved one over in the war I would love to see the man suffer but if we were to do the type of justice I think he should receive then that would mean we have become the very thing that my loved one lost his life over.

Re: #64. I'm not saying people can't have esoteric 'values', but I wish people would understand that the world simply doesn't work that way. You either have to impose those high-minded values on everyone, universally, or rely on your own people to violate those values to keep you safe enough to have them.

I agree. Saddam must be put to death so that the Iraqi people will have absolutely no fear of Saddam coming back into power.

Actually, the authorities have said that he is being "cooperative." I think that he will end up giving the names and locations of his supporters and will spend the rest of his life in prison. But I might be wrong.

People like that will do anything to save their own skin.

541 deaths in a war that was almost universally predicted to have a death-toll in the thousands. 456 American, 53 UK and 32 from the other nations that are supporting the war. Not to in any lessen the tragic impact of these deaths on the families of those who gave their lives in the war against terrorism, but had anyone predicted that Iraq would be liberated in so short a time and Saddam captured with this loss of life, they would have been regarded as optimistic.
