Anybody tried downloading Mormegils Xmas Wall in the last couple of hours?
I have now tried 4 times and cannot get the whole file. I know its not just me as i have just had an email from someone else with the same problem. Have we got a server or library problem

yrag....Gary just returned to the thread....i am away from my own computer at the moment but will check server etc when i get home and try again and then let you know how i get on. Your tech help and pointers are always invaluable.

I am praying that this is a temporary prob and limited to just a few of us as Pat has enough on his plate at the moment without worrying him about this

BTW.......jafo/China Cat......You obviously got broadband....You lucky, lucky, lucky people.....where i live the phone exchange consists of a couple of rodents running around a tread mill so that may account for the problem

Leo...I got ADSL for the simple reason it made wall moderation just that bit less painfull....at least the groaning wasn't interminable...

Jafo.....yes, i can imagine going through all the walls and skins must be quite time consuming

yrag........Gary nice try but i have had a crack at both servers using both IE and WC browser and same everytime......never had this problem before with any skin or downloading anything from any site for that matter and some of the files have been much larger than this one.......i am on dial up with a quite reasonable speed of 5kbs. You will see there are posts from two others with the same problem on the walls comments so my guess that there are quite a few people who have had the same prob........Can't think of anything else but it just seems strange that it seems to be only effecting some people.........ADSL users appear OK.......Any other folks on dial up having the same problem with this skin?

hm...sounds like this is that same thing that keeps happening to me when I try to download the Winter 2003 WB skin. I can never get the whole file to download...it poops out in the middle of the download, then wbload.exe crashes. when I've tried to do the old change the .wba extention to .zip to try extracting it, I get a message that the .zip file is corrupt.

weird.

Yes, i guessed it there are major problems with downloading these skins for some people. Now all we got to do is work out why? and a solution.

Leo goes running off to look for yrag. yrag where are you? come out to play? Are there you are! Yrag, look leave Annie alone we got some serious business to attend to here

BTW x-scratch.....thanks for your kind offer but we really need to sort this from WC's end. Sure appreciate the thought though

OK this is what I found out: I downloaded this wall with Internet Explorer,Mozilla,SDC(both servers) and Wincustomize Browser on 2 different computers. For a grand total of 10 downloads and that doesn't count for the 11 times before that. And I came up with zip, a 2.5mb empty zip file. I downloaded a WB skin and a wallpaper today and they worked fine.

Leo I'm on a dial up with the same speed connection between 5 & 6 kbs.

Monty its a good job that you raised this - i think this is a bigger problem with this skin than we realise. I bet quite a few others have had the same problem but either have not reported it or just put it down to the Great Thanksgiving Server Crash

Now if only i could find yrag........or IP.......they are wizops with this sort of problem

I've tried downloading the Winter 2003 WB skin 3 ways now...IE 6, Netscape 7, and Stardock Central. Changed servers from Atlanta to California, thanks to the tips I read in this thread...didn't have a clue about this before, and it seemed kinda dorky that I was downloading from Atlanta when I live in California.

Anywho, the end result is the same...the download crashes before it's complete, no matter which way I'm trying to do it.

I figured out how to get these walls to download for me after 2 days of trying, I don't know why I did'nt figure it out sooner, DUHHHH!!! I just disabled my virus software and firewall long enough for the download and it went very smooth...Try it. maybe it will work for you too. Hope this helps some of you.

Hm, very interesting...I'm pretty sure I already tried to download the Winter 2003 skin with the firewall and anti-virus programs disabled, with no success. But I went ahead and tried it again just now, because I figured it was worth another try.

First attempt, the download crashed again, and I got a message saying the connection with the server had been reset. I was ready to give up then and there, but I gave it one more try. The download picked up where it had left off...and it went to completion this time. It also installed successfully.

FINALLY!!! Hooray!!!

So thanks for the tip, Hy_Rolr! Hopefully disabling the antivirus and firewall programs will work for everyone else too.

Glad I could help Jinn Fizz, I probably should have mentioned also that I rebooted,so as to have a clean start then went to the download page, then disabled AV & FW then started the download, and amazingly mine also started from where it had left off before, even after a reboot! Go figure anyway it worked and what an awsome skin it is too.

I have not tried the AV/Firewall workaround yet but why would you need to do that? Surely you are leaving yourself wide open for an attack for the 10 to 30 minutes that you are downloading and with the rate of attacks is this not a bit risky.

This workaround still does not answer the question of why a lot of us cannot download the skin

Leo - you're absolutely right about firewall and AV...it could be as simple as the server problem and the dail-up connection (the server seems to go in and out at will). Try one thing that may keep your connection open...open WB config and use 'install from web' option and see if it works that way. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll send you the file.

Thanks Gary........I am at work at the moment and i will give it a try later and let you know how i get on.......the strange thing is that any other skin that i wanted to download from WC during these goes came thru without any troubles. I must have tried about 20 times now to get this wall and the same thing - failure. But try any other skin and total success. Weird. This points to a problem with the skin itself but if that was the case everybody would be having these problems. As i say weird. Anyway i will be home in about 10 hours and will let you know
