Outlook 2003

Nevermind - seems it was not a problem with Outlook. I just switched default browsers and voila...avant browser opens after I click on a link in recieved mail and displays the page.

Use Mozilla Thunderbird... I prefer it over Outlook... www.Mozilla.com if you wanna look into it

I looked over at the Office web site, and I don't really see anything that would compel me to switch from XP to 2003.

What, as a user point of view, do you find better in Outlook 2003 in particular, and Office 2003 in general?

Outlook 2003 includes additional junk filtering, even above the thresholds we've configured via our mail server software. Honestly, if for no other reason than that, it's worth the price. Yes, you can store searches, it's got an improved UI over the XP version, and some other bits. But I'm happier with the junk filtering and the ability to add a toolbar item for "suppress this spammer" than anything else.

Now... the rest of Office... not to be a downer, but I don't use 95% of the features available in it anyhow. Office XP will do for that until I buy a new pc.

 

Oh, and somewhere I have a link to a program which allows one to "adjust" the "my way or the highway" attachment levels for those who are prepared. Will try and find the link tomorrow.

May be off topic a bit, but I will be getting a new laptop soon, and one thing I would like to be able to do is synchronize my Outlook between my laptop and my desktop. Is there a built-in feature in Outlook (XP or 2003?) that would allow me to do that?  If I just drop the PST file in the briefcase, it would just look at the date of the latest PST file in general and overwrite the oldest, right? Not try to synchronize the newest emails, contacts and appoitments between the two?

Paxx - As far as I know it doesn't have a synchronize feature, but you can use the backup feature to back up all your personal folders on your main system and then use the restore to import them to your lap Outlook......you can also put the backup on auto and it will then be up to date when ever you want.

The junkmail feature is really the main reason that I upgraded. I also like the new layout - it's more "viewer friendly" and helps in organizing the email. The changes in the other Office 2003 components aren't significantly noticeable, however, there are a lot of "under the hood" improvements.

It's not difficult to change the registry to accomodate file attachments - my problem was that I thought the changes I made were not working when they really were - it was just some IE setting that prevented my internet explorer from opening properly when clicking on a link in a recieved email.

For those that are wary of editing the registry, here is a link to a website for a product called "DetachOL". The program is free but in development. http://www.mcdev.com

It's quick and painless. In my opinion, it is better than many of the com add-in's available that do the same thing.

Try Mozilla Thunderbird, I prefer it over Outlook, www.Mozilla.com

I tried thunderbird once, but alas my trusty outlook is the better. It seems that thunderbird can't connect to a webmail smtp server. Anyway there is really no point is using thunderbird when you already got outlook with office xp. Well for mozilla firebird is better then ie, imho

Thunderbird has nothing to do with Outlook, although it may be a good competitor for Outlook Express.  Unlike Outlook Express and Thunderbird, Outlook isn't just an email program, it's a personal organiser. It manages your contacts, your calendar, your tasks and of course your email.

Please Scooby, there is no comparison. It's like comparing Word and Notepad.

I have read alot of really good things about Outlook 2003, is it available for purchase without having to buy the complete Office 2003 suite or not? Dumb question , I know..lol But I don't need alot of office software I'm never gonna use just to get a good email app, ya know? I currently use Pocomail3 and it works flawlessly, I think out of any email app I have tried, this one was actually worth paying for.

Yes, it can be I 've found out, went down to the Office Depot, thinking I was gonna get me a copy and I nearly fainted at the price.....lol..$109 dollars. It may be good, but it aint that good!
