I'm getting this mysterious black rim around each system.

me too, barely playable with the ring, and as well the zooming tools are all wonky.
Yes, the game is broken at the moment. The rim obscures the entrance to the subspace corridors. You can guess where they are, but this needs to be fixed sooner than later.
Derek said on the GC Discord that the problem is with the build for Epic, the development build is working fine. He's investigating.
This has been fixed with 11/30 update. It even fixed my saved game.
