Dark Angel got cancelled after two seasons, and unfortunately it never really got all that good. The best thing about the show was Jessica Alba.

Buffy certainly does get dark. It's covered rape, murder and countless gory deaths over the years. If I hadn't watched both shows I'd probably lump it together with Charmed too. They're worlds apart though, and Charmed actually irritates me more than it entertains. It tries too hard to copy the formula of its rivals.

Hum, grayhaze. The little bits I saw certainly didn't cover those topics.
Was mainly a teenage girl fighting ridiculous looking gouls, or vampires.  Dunno, maybe there's more to it than I saw. But it didn't look any more "serious" than Wonder Woman, which I figured it was the modern equivalent.

If that were the case, it never would have lasted beyond the first season. I think it's pretty damn impressive for a TV show to be spawned from a very poor movie and make it through seven seasons. Sure, it's had its ups and downs, but it's never got to the point where it's lost any of its appeal.

The character development and issues covered by that show make most episodes of Star Trek look like a poorly-directed school play. It created a believable world where you truly cared about the characters and couldn't wait for the next episode just to see where the show would go next. In contrast, Star Trek TNG created a squeaky-clean childlike view of a future where humans have overcome most of their 'failings' and where you could pretty much guarantee that the next episode would feature a temporal or spacial anomoly. Boring!

It all comes down to different strokes for different folks. Everyone has different tastes.

I don't think I mentioned I watch Buffy in this thread until now... I do, I do watch Buffy My girls love that show! We are currently awaiting the 5th season to come out on dvd.

Oh, and, I've never watched Angel. I hear Spikes going to be on it soooo I just might

Paxx, whether Buffy and Angel are your cup of tea or not (it depends if you can buy into them), they're not really for the 11 year old crowd. They both deal with alot of adult themes via comedy and drama in a pretty artful manner using the girl/monster/demon horror angle as clever metaphores. Personally, I thought Buffy began running out of creative juice awhile ago and became rather spotty. Angel has held up betterm, and I think it was the better of the two the past couple of years). Actually, I thought Firefly, from the creator of both Buffy and Angel, was much better than either of those two, or at least, showed quite a bit of promise.

I've tried to watch Enterprise but, for me, it's just too dreaful and poorly executed. It really never capatilized on it's premise of being a prequel and fell back on canabalizing Voyager and The Next Generation. (Then again, Voyager never capitalized on its premise of being a mixed crew at odds with each other trapped alone in a distant part of the galaxy with limited resources). To be fair, the end of the Enterprise's last season and the beginning of the new season has shown some improvement.

The problem I do have with Star Trek in general (and having watched and enjoyed it for 30 years), is that its a perfect world where there is no need for money, nor religion, where humans are inevitably morally and creatively superior to the other races they encounter. This wouldn't be so bad if the characters actually were morally superior, but it often came off as rather trite and simplistlic. It's like being talked down to by a 12 year old.

This is why I really enjoyed Babylon 5 which, in my opinion seemed to acknowledge the human condition more honestly than Star Trek. And it's why I really want to watch Deep Space 9 (in it's entirety), which from the episodes I've seen (I only saw the first few seasons), really tried to stretch and break the mold and do something new and fresh.
