I can't speak for others with absolute certainty, but when I make wallpapers that have this level of visual 3D, I use 3D Studio Max. While I am sure it could be done with a program like Photoshop or PSP, it would just be easier with 3D rendering software. That doesn't mean you have to pay alot of money on one, I believe that Blender is one that you can download for free(I wouldn't know where to get it, so try a google search). I have seen the work that people have done with it and it seems like its just as good as 3D studio max(Probably the PSP version of Studio Max ). At any rate, I hope this helped at least a little - in truth, I would like to see what others use too!

if you read the comments on that link, you'll notice that adni replied to another inquirer about the proggy, and he said its Bryce.
