A notice about ratings

A notice about ratings

OK, I think a notice here is in order.

Lets first establish what ratings are and what value they have.  A rating is a way to let peers give their appreciation of your work. Ratings range from 1 to 10, 1 being the worse possible rating and 10 being the ultimate best.  Please keep that in mind when rating a skin.  Please do not abuse of 1's and 2's, just as you should use the rating of 10 rather sparingly as well.  A 1 means "It can't get worse than this", and a 10 means "Nothing can better this".
We have noticed that there is way too many 1's and 10's given out. They should be exception. In theory, only a extreme few skins should deserve one or the other.  So, please try to be fair in your ratings, and never use ratings to punish somebody you dislike or reward reward your friends.  Give your ratings according to what YOU feel about a piece. NEVER give a rating to try to raise or lower an overall rating you feel is too high or too low.  For example, never give a 1 to a skin rated 8 because you feel it deserves a 6. If you think it deserves a 6, then give it a 6.  Same goes the other way: don't give a 10 because you think it's rated too low.

Remember that admins can see all the individual ratings. We can see for each skin who rated what, just as we can see for each user what how he rated each skin.  If we feel there is abuse in the ratings, we could at some point remove the rating priviledges of any individual.

We highly encourage everybody to rate, and to rate often, but be fair, and do not misuse the priviledge.

Thank you.

However, as a result of this, I guess I do understand that this is not the same user base that I am used to...and much different management style and environment. I see that I cannot hold you to any sort of user or site management style or watermark that may exist in my head.

you have some very good points, many of which i am not really in a position to address. after all, i am not an admin, so i can ignore a lot of their problems! *sigh of relief*

with regard to the "management style", some of the skinners (who are reasonably important to the site) can be just a little bit touchy, especially when they feel someone is conducting a personal campaign against them and their work. as an admin, how do you respond to their concerns? sometimes they really are being got at, but at other times confusion over the system seems to be the problem. add in "strange" english by people who aren't native english speakers...

at times, it seems to need the patience of a saint to be an admin here.

No problem. How many times now have I gone off only to apologize? Just give me a title of "Resident Hot-Head".

Please explain...in what respect?

Orion....in the respect of we poor admins copping flak from all quarters in regular barrages....the infrequent visitor is likely to be oblivious to most of it...

> What the chocoladevla! I thought it was just about ratings, and an appeal to the integrity of those who do rate, and if it was my appeal, I would appeal to the admins to have the integrity to rate and do just the same as we are expected to do. That's not so difficult. Oh and Jafo, flak is history, it's laserbeam now. (Wondering if I need a smiley now, and btw why temper with a smiley....if your dad smacks you and then give you a cookie or candy, would you cry less??)

To Jafo and paxx (and the other admins at this site)...

I can only imagine how I'd react if one of my users tried to tell me how to do my job. I should have put myself in your shoes before replying. I will try an not be a back-seat admin again. I apologize with no excuses.

A lot of ratings don't reflect the quality of the skin. They only reflect whether somebody likes the colors or the design. To me, those quick reaction, inaccurate, low ratings need to be balanced out. I feel that a skin with high-quality graphics that works correctly should be rated 7 or above.

What's important to me is the quality of the graphics, the quality of the design, the colors and color harmonies, the functionality, and the legibility of the text. It doesn't matter if I like it, if it's a well done skin, I'll show my appreciation to the artist.

The ratings should not be a popularity contest. The number of downloads covers the popularity issue.

A lot of skins only get rated by a few people. If one of those ratings is very low, but the skin is high-quality, then it seems reasonable to balance it out with a high rating. I try to make sure a job well done is rewarded by a rating of 7 or higher. It takes a lot of work to create a high-quality skin.
