WB skinning tips from a Newbie GIRL (hehe) Skinner:

1). Make constant backups of your WB skin in case you have a code foul-up or mess up an image and accidentally save it etc.

2). CODE is not scary…all ‘code is’ is basically just information telling the images in the skin what to do. Look in Skinstudio and take a look at parts of the skin and look down below where it gives you information about the size and if it is stretched or tiled…these are important factors in making your skin look right. Don’t feel intimidated…play with the margins until you get the look you want…that’s what the are there for!

3). Keep your calculator handy and note in other skins that most have 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 etc. images for that particular button so if you want to do a new button by scratch be sure to times it by the default image, so if you want to make a bigger image then be sure to times it by that many you see on the default.

4). Also note that each button may can be very unique…one button might have the ‘hover, default, normal’ thing and others don’t. Keep aware of that and if you keep constant check of yourself you will see. 

5) Trying to utilize transparencies on your side-bars will render your side-window resizing USELESS. Not worth it!

6). The roll up bar will roll up properly as many pixels is your sidebar size. So if you have a realllllllllllly long sidebar size the rollup will be all wonky if it’s toooooooo huge!

7). DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT EVER in (WB4.0) Basic settings and check “Skin window backgrounds”…it will REWRITE YOUR CODE FOR YOUR OWN DAMNED WINDOWBLINDS and every other windowblinds you use as well! DO NOT DO IT and it will slow your system down!

8). The pink parts (transparent parts) should be used at an absolute minimum because they slow down the computer immensely…also (tip from Elvee) tiling an image is more work but a better outcome when necessary and will save much CPU!

9). Experiment and use the ‘refresh’ button a lot on Skinstudio...and if you change your images a lot to try something be sure click on something else and then back to the image involved because for some reason skinstudio does not refresh the image that was changed always without hitting another image and then going back quickly to the image you want to see changed. (Working with imperfect software 101). Hey, I ain’t perfect! Hehe

10). This isn’t rocket science, and if you love art and making it you too can translate your art to the ‘holy grail’ of skinning. I have a long way to go but I want to help as many people as I can realize that there is nothing so intimidating about skinning and that it CAN be done by anyone and that’s why Skinstudio was put out in the first place…for us up and comers…it’s not perfect but it sure is easier than notepad at times.

In closing, skin for the fact that you love it…that you hunger to do it…that it makes you want to be different and creative and not just to pump something out every so often to be noticed…when a quality skin shows up it’s because that author didn’t do it in a few hours…it might have even taken weeks…

So, respect those who are before you but respect yourself as well by doing the best you can so that you can stand proud.

Over and out,

-Shmoops!

P.S. SMILE!

Shmoopy, check your mail. I was asking for some help with coloring buttons.

Bill, those are .tga files...and if you have PSP 7.0 you can over-color them or if you're good at masking you can make your own.

If you want to gander at the current skin I'm working on you will see that I changed a few of the .tga files to my own masked shapes. http://www.darkseraphim.com/skinz/Lullabye.wba

I would have written you back personally but I think this is a question that comes up a lot and would help to be addressed her.

G'night for now...

I didn't know about reason number eight, but I'm going to do that anyway. Besides, most of the dialog backgrounds tend to be single colors anyway.

Another thing to NEVER DO: Do not overlap the margins on the top titlebar, it will make your skin non-functional to say the least. Great thread Shmoopy! This one should get a sticky at the top of the board

If I didn't already know what you're saying here, I doubt I ever would.

Not true............. you must have clicked the "backgrounds" button, and checked "Override the skin setting for the background bitmaps"

Koasati...I was tired last night. One thing for sure...describing skinning is harder than doing it.

Hmm. I didn't have the ovrride checked...

I guess I shoulda said keep your calculator handy and be sure to count the pixel width of an image and times it by the default number of images needed for a button you are making from scratch. Hmm. Even that sounds more confusing I suppose.

Ahhhhhhhh heck!

I'm just waking up so I better not try and describe anything else.

Hope this thread stays active a long time and is contributed to by lots of people.

I love to see all blinds have backgrounds skinned. Blinds using the default backgrounds stick out like a sore thumb in my opinion

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSs!

The mystery of the .tga file is solved for me!

When going into the "save-as" dialogue to save a custom .tga file in Paintshop pro, be sure when in the 'save as' mode to click on options (the bottom button below save/cancel/help) and make sure to check "UNCOMPRESSED" and they should show up fine!

How I make my .tga files masked in PSP:

I create an image and then I cut and paste it so that it is in 'selected mode' and then I click on the "selections" menu and click on "save to alpha channel" and then I click on the masks menu and click load from Alpha channel and save it and voila!

/me does a happy dance!

I apologize if I came off a bit grumpy in my previous post. Some of your tips aren't all that clear, but I couldn't do any better.

I don't know why the backgrounds aren't working correctly for you, I have Skin Windows Backgrounds checked, and all is fine.......

I have an additional info concerning tga files and PSP. After pulling out what was left of my hair, trying every tip I had read, and anything I could think, my tga's were completely invisible in SkinStudio, and WindowBlinds. What I discovered was PSP8 will not save tga with alpha channel correctly, even though Jasc support had told me it would. (they'll be getting an email from me..... it's their fault I have less hair than I had a few days ago.)  This morning I opened PSP7 and tried it, and it works just fine.    Why didn't I try 7 days ago?......... coz like I told Sylva yesterday, "the obvious often eludes me".

No need to apologize, Koasati.

Well, that's interesting about PSP 8.0 and the mysterious disappearing .tga files...I have been using 7.0 for the .tga files too thinking I must have to do a different procedure in 8.0 that I hadn't figured out yet! Well, ain't THAT special? I hope they fix it SOON...but I'm glad I have both 7.0 and 8.0 installed just in case now!

/me corrects her last tip...

When I edit a graphic in Skinstudio I have PSP8 set to open up automatically. The problem is it opens up a new instance of PSP every time. How do I fix it so that Skinstudio opens the same window of PSP. (assuming PSP is minimized to the taskbar) I have checked preferences in both programs but haven't found anything. Thanks.

Thanks for the pointers Shmoopy. For people like me who open SkinStudio and say, "How the heck am I gonna figure all this stuff out and get it all to work properly?" this helps quite a bit.

bordfryr123; In Preferences, Images Tab.... set Shell Open at the top of the list. It worked for me.

Koasati, that did the trick. Thanks! I must start writing this stuff down.
