Metallica!!.....................sell-outs?

not sell outs just more people have followed them and overcome them in doing so.

They will still be viewed as good old 'rockers'

If their album lives up to the reviews I've read, then I don't care who they tour with, looking forward to the somewhat return to the old school sound.

By the way, what does 'and the mindless, raving japs' mean? Just kind of caught me as odd.

Mindless Raving Japs = I believe he is referring to the type of people that blast Linkin Park in their hondas which have only one sub for the low and high end sound, and it sounds horrible, but they don't care because the hole car is vibrating, and it annoys everyone around them....

Actually they're smart; how many younger people are going to be there for Linkin Park and even these other bands, you know.


I've had tickets for their upcoming concert and couldn't care less about Linkin Park and especially Limp Bizkit. Besiedes Metallica, I'm really lookin towards the Deftones and Mudvayne.


I've also heard great things about their upcoming album. The Deftones' new album is being released on the 20th and I should have that by tomorrow or the next. The song Hexagram is the joint. Mudvayne's new joint is pretty good too. Besides those two bands, it's gonna be a bangin ass concert.

Metallica has upset me since the day they decided it would be cool to make a big stink about Napster.

Ah...but not me....I'm glad they did...

Something needed to be done about napster, but I don't think the blame should be put on Napster for what the napster users do....

if a person buys a VCR and copys movies with it, then should the VCR manufacturer be held responsible...????

And it wasn't only Metallica trying to bring down Napster, in fact there were many, many bands trying to bring down Napster...

I have something to add but I will make a new thread since it is not about Metallica.

Metallica have been sellouts sice'93 when they released the black album. Before that they were mediocre at best. They have never done anything original and are highly overrated. They built thier name in the eighties by pledging to be "about the music" they were making and against any outward image. Today they are everything they said they never would be and got rich doing it. Just MHO, but there are better bands to listen to, and artists much more worthy of praise and support than those arrogant untalented Arses!

I agree with you competely knatzz. Personally I prefer listening to my pre-Black Album CDs when I do listen to Metallica.

I prefer not to listen to it at all. Moved past that stage to the darker tones eminating from the northern lands.

But er, why is a band considered "sell out" if they get popular?

Metallica has sucked every since they cut their hair.

I listened to them before they were ever on the radio or before they had "One" on MTV.  Once they became mainstream, they became more "PC" and less heavy.

They aren't the same four horsemen anymore, either.  They have a new bass player.  (Who has played for other bands including Ozzy).

MTV brought back headbangers ball last weekend.  Metallica hosted it.  They are a bunch of lack luster 40 year olds trying to act like teenagers.

I could rant all day about this..... I liked them back before they were "known", but they have been selling out along the way every since.  In the beginning, they bashed other bands for "being for the money" because they were "about the music" and played free concerts until they got a following and started seeing $$$.  I have no problem with them making money, but they are hypocrites in general.

hmmm....should pull out Garage Days revisited and go listen to a bit of "Last Caress-green hell" or "Am I Evil" for old times sake......

Metallica play music.
They enjoy doing so.
They enjoy doing it in front of people.
They enjoy getting paid to do so.

If that's selling out, then every band signed to any label has sold-out.
If that's selling out then any band playing gigs in their local pub has sold out.
Come back when you truly understand the concept if a band 'selling out', Toolwraith.

I guess you have to know Metallica from back when they started to know why people call them "sell-outs".  They started out trying to be like a heavy metal "Phish".  They didn't stay that way.

There's not much "metal" in Metallica these days, but that does not make them "sell-outs".

I hafta agree with KarmaGirl, they USED TO be the shiznat, now they're just shi... er.. crappy.

I gave up on them when I fired up Napster one day & got the message "you have been banned from using Napster by Metallica..." etc. That very day I unsubscribed to their newsletter & vowed to NEVER give them another thin dime outta my pocket. What clinched it for me though was Lars' answer in an interview when asked if we wasn't afraid of aliennating the fans & he said something to the effect "we've got enough fans already..." I had to agree with him, they don't need me as a fan.

What really makes my bacon angry is that when they started out they built their careers on tape-trading, they had no problem at all with any/everyone swapping Kill 'Em All & Ride The Lightning, if not for trading they probably never would have made it off the ground. But then all of a sudden once they've got a taste for the bling nobody should be allowed to trade music anymore? That's total BS (imho), seems as if in fact they were biting the very hands that fed them.

So, after I hacked my reg & got my Napster back up and running I changed my username. I still use this nick with whatever p2p application that I happen to be using at any given time, say hello to me if you happen to see me on whatever file sharing proggie you use, my username is "larscanlickmyballs".

I am looking SO forward to downloading St. Anger and NOT paying for it. Whether or not I actually listen to it or not remains to be seen, the little wee bit I've heard so far sounded like Ministry to me and when I want to listen to Ministry I'll just bust out some Ministry thank you very much.

I liked them when they were nobody. Now they are rich and left me behind. Those rich bastards should burn in hell for not staying poor and true to their beginning roots. They got so big and popular and I don't like that because... well, because times change and I can't be a head banging moron forever and sooner or later have to grow up a bit and change image otherwise die an old dinosaur of the past and that is the only way they'd be remembered but since they've changed they can keep making music and get richer and that pisses me off. Damn I envy those guys but forget about it.

But, it *doesn't* sound good.  Once they went mainstream...they went mainstream.  They became "PC" so that they would be played on the radio.  Read some lyrics from Garage Inc. and you will see what I mean.

By "sell-out" I'm not talking about just the money.  They sold out their whole style.  They have softened up so that they will appeal to the masses.  Now their music totally bites.  Sounds like 90% of the other crap out there.

those tunes on Garage Inc. were all cover versions, so not their own lyrics anyways.

years ago i liked their old tunes, now rock music bores me anyways and i could not care less how much money those old farts make.

Garage days is another example of why they have no talent, most of the songs on the album are covers. ex. Last Caress is a Misfits song!! But most people think they acutally wrote it. I don't have a problem with cover albums, but it just shows how average they really are. A large portion of what is considered their best work was done first by other bands, or band members who have since left (Dave Mustaine) or passed away (Cliff Burton). All they did was turn up the guitars and let their singer (I use that term loosely) butcher someone elses work. James and Lars are tag-alongs, and the others are just scabs. They used to rip on anyone who was played on the radio or had a video on MTV. Then they started watering down their sound so that they could get airtime/videotime. Then they cut their hair and started prancing around in makeup and designer clothes! (again, they made a name for themselves by ripping on anyone who had an "Image". THIS is why they are sellouts. It's not about them making money, or changing their music, every artist needs to do these things to grow/survive. It's about them betraying everything they stood for in the name of the almighty dollar. I agree that the term sellout is overused, and quite often unjustly. But Metallica are sellout poster-boys! They have become everything they used to preach against (Laughing all the way to the bank spitting on their true fans along the way)

Gosh...there's nothing in the world worse than a jaded fan...come on, people....things change, people change...music changes....don't like the changes?..fine...just don't find that to be some excuse to pirate the music...

I am going to enjoy illegally downloading and burning my own copy of Metallica's new album for free because it pisses Metallica off.

I hope I'm not the "Jaded fan" you're referencing Jafo, because I'm not a fan of metallica at all, and never was, not even in the '80's. I have never bought anything they have done, and also never downloaded anything from them "kazaa style" either. It is impossible to play a heavy style of guitar for 15 years and not be exposed to them though, sadly. I guess you could call me an "Anti-fan" And I second your point; just because they are untalented 2-faced jerks doesn't give anyone the right to steal their crap, er music. Yes, that would be because it was THEIR music they were trading and they gave their blessing to such trades.

I doubt anyone using Napster to swap music has any form of permission from the related bands saying "Yeah sure, please steal our music and illegally distribute it"





As for the people whining because Metallica aren't 'metal' anymore, why would they keep playing the same stuff?

Their new stuff is certainly different from the old stuff, but I'd say it's as 'metal' as anything they've done.

Take 'Fuel' from reload or 'Wasting my hate' from Load. Pretty fast, pretty tight. Almost classic 'tallica.

As for the rest, it's called 'evolving'. They can play what they damn well like, and if people don't like it, who gives a crap? Don't buy the album.

I saw them play here in '99, and trust me, they still have 'it'.



Besides if they still played the same stuff, people would lose interest if they were hearing album after album of the same thing.

How many people can remember when Exodus, or Anihhilator, or Armoured Saint last made an album that didn't make you think "Umm, isn't this just the last one with new lyrics?"



What it all comes down to is quite simply this:

How many of you have a band that's selling out stadiums, selling millions of albums and have millions of fans around the world, like the 'untalented' Metallica?
