Music Review: Fetty Wap "Trap Queen"

Fetty Wap

Trap Queen

Album: Up Next

Year: 2014

Fetty Wap spends all his money on his girlfriend in the superficial  “Trap Queen.”

In the intro, Wap namechecks his rap group. (“Remy Boyz/1738.”)

Frail synths open the single, setting a breakable tone. He remembers when he first saw his girlfriend. He was attracted to her from the start and immediately asked her if she wanted to get high. However, it’s the money he makes that’s truly important to him. Together, they try to acculmuate all they can. He visits her at the strip club, where she works. He enjoys watching spread her legs and slide across the floor. The other guys may leer but she goes home with him. (“I'm like "hey, what's up, hello"/Seen yo pretty ass soon as you came in that door/I just wanna chill, got a sack for us to roll/Married to the money, introduced her to my stove/Showed her how to whip it, now she remixin' for low/She my trap queen, let her hit the bando/We be countin' up, watch how far them bands go/We just set a goal, talkin' matchin' Lambos/Got 50, 60 grand, 500 grams though/Man, I swear I love her how she work the damn pole/Hit the strip club, we be letting bands go/Everybody hating, we just call them fans though/In love with the money, I ain't never letting go.”)

In the chorus, he drives around and shops with his girlfriend. They enjoy the domestic life. (“And I get high with my baby/I just left the mall, I'm gettin' fly with my baby, yeah//And I can ride with my baby/I be in the kitchen cookin' pies with my baby, yeah/And I can ride with my baby/I just left the mall, I'm gettin' fly with my baby, yeah/And I can ride with my baby/I be in the kitchen cookin' pies with my baby.”)

He’s always on the lookout to buy her expensive things. He wants her to have everything she wants. He can afford it. (“I hit the strip with my trap queen cause all we know is bands/I just might snatch up a 'Rari and buy my boo a Lamb'/I might just snatch her a necklace, drop a couple on a ring/She ain't wantin' for nothin' because I got her everything/It's big Zoo Wap from the bando, without dinero can't go/Remy Boyz got the stamp, though/Count up hella, them bands though/How far can your bands go?/Fetty Wap I'm living fifty thousand K how I stand though/If you checkin' for my pockets I'm like.”)

The  chorus and first verse again.

In the final section, he says he’s the person everyone want to get to know back home. (“I be smoking dope and you know Backwoods what I roll/Remy Boyz, Fetty eating shit up that's fasho/I'll run in ya house, then I'll fuck your ho.”)

Wap holds onto his money and his girlfriend with a firm grip and a loud whine. He just doesn’t understand why others don’t get it. He’s almost ready to tear up all over his money.

The vigilant “Trap Queen” ultimately has the wrong priorities, valuing wealth and possessions over other things.
