Midnight Memories

Album: Midnight Memories

Year: 2014

Harry Styles lives like a rock star in the rowdy “Midnight Memories.”

A rambunctious guitar opens the single, setting a wild tone. Styles looks out from the hotel window, looking at the buildings lining the sky. He announces to the rest of the band that he got a text from one of his friends in town. They are going to throw a party. He flips on the television and sees a news story, discussing them and analyzing their lives. He turns it off. (“Straight off the plane to a new hotel/Just touched down, you could never tell/Big house party with a crowded kitchen
/People talk shh but we don't listen.”)

He doesn’t like when people tell him what to do. He’s not an aimless teenager anymore. His goal in life is to drink, party, and meet girls. (“Tell me that I'm wrong but I do what I please/Way too many people in the Addison Lee/Now I'm at the age when I know what I need, oh whoa.”)

In the chorus, he can be found a little after midnight with his arm around her girl, happily drunk. They’ll be singing some drinking song. He wants to live in the now. (“Midnight memories, oh oh oh/Baby you and me/Stumblin' in the street/Singing, singing, singing, singing/Midnight memories, oh oh oh/Baby where we go?/Never say no/Just do it, do it, do it, do it.”)

He spots another girl. He calls to her, trying to get her attention. She glances at him, figuring out how she knows him. He says it’s ok and asks her if she would like to hang out. They are going to find another bar. It’s the usual night for him. (“5 foot something with the skinny jeans/Don't look back, baby follow me/I don't know where I'm going but I'm finding my way/Same old shit but a different day.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, they don’t pay attention to the tab. They keep adding to it. It’s their time to get away from themselves and forget. They are normal people for an evening. (“You and me and all our friends/I don't care how much we spend/Baby this is what the night is for, or, or/I know nothing's making sense/For tonight let’s just pretend/I don't wanna stop till get me oh.”)

The chorus is sung again to end the single.

One Direction enjoy being naughty and get a chance to live out their Rolling Stones fantasy of tearing down a city without a thought. Usually, the rockstar songs end up unintentionally dark and broody. They manage to make it seem like a once-in-a-lifetime chance and missing out would be something to regret.

The mischievious  “Midnight Memories” will get the hearts fluttering.
