Surrender Questions

In my current campaign, my Kraxis empire is located in an isolated position in the south-east corner of the map. I share a border with only one other civilization (have a full 10 include ona huge map) and I also share a border with two wildlands.

The civilization I share a border with (I can't remember it's name -I'm a new player) just surrendered, despite being ranked 4th of 10 in power ratings. It had been at war with many others, though not with me. When it surrendered it completely disappeared, opening up several fertile land tiles (it had had 6 or 7 cities when it surrendered). I quickly built around 6 or 7 pioneers and colonized those former city sites without hardly any competition from the other civs which had bordered the surrendering civ. This completely shifted the balance of power in my favor.

This doesn't feel right to me. I wasn't at war with the surrendering civ, and yet I now have all of their lands without even any unrest. Even though I have to build the new cities from scratch, this is made much easier by all of my town's "+ food for whole faction buildings. and, of course, no occupation penalty.

But mainly because they surrendered to the civs they were at war with, not me. Those were the civs who were fighting for this land.

So do you turn off the opponent surrender threshold? If not, why do you leave it on? What are the benefits of keeping it enabled? Thanks in advance

Thats more of a dice role in the situation your talking about.  The game has a lot of options to beat you and a lot of ways for you to win.  I'd consider it a chance outcome, and be grateful you can steamroll with your new found wealth.

play more and my post will make more sense.  Good luck.  Its fun!

In my case, they surrendered with 6 or 7 cities left. If I had reduced the Surrender Threshold (but not turn it off entirely), would they have still surrendered with so many cities left? Thanks in advance

edit: I had the setting on normal

They don't surrender per se I think, they give up when they can't reach their game winning goal. I've been testing taking the slider to never, and they still do it. But yes, it is highly annoying.

I've turned off the surrender threshold.

Imo, that entire aspect of the game ... leaves much to be desired.

  • To begin with, the AI does not always surrender when you would expect them to. Sometimes they are within a hair's breath of being anihilated....yet no surrender. Other times they have a thriving empire....and then poof...they give up. There really needs to be some more consistency with the setting you've selected at the onset.
  • Secondly, (it's been awhile so I'm trying to recall), the surrender of a faction reduces all their existing cities to rubble. Complete, utter fail imo. Why would I want the AI to surrender if I see cities within my grasp that I would like to add to my empire? Likewise, why would the AI not surrender when all they have left is pathetic little cities, none of which I would ever want. One of the following two options should exist (of the two, I prefer the second choice):
    • The victor should receive a list of the AI's assets and be able to choose what to keep and what to raze.
    • The remaining cities should turn neutral and continue to fight as independant city states.
  • Thirdly, there is an inconsistency between surrender and defeat and resigning.
    • If the AI surrender's, you receive the sovereign, but with a penalty (I forget what the wound is called now). I'm fine with this approach, but it needs to be expanded on for the other victory types.
    • Imo, if the AI refuses to surrender and you finally defeat him in battle, you should still receive the sovereign as a captured unit in this case too, only with a different penalty/wound that is similar in potency.
    • Lastly, sometimes an AI just gives up and then stands there for hire. This resignation should have a penalty attached, because the sovereign essentially hires him/her-self out as a merc to the next faction that comes by and is willing to pay the price.

On a side note, why isn't there independant city states within the game already??? Why can't people gather together in an effort to survive after the cataclysm do so without a sovereign backing them up??

This would be a great addition.  Something for the next expansion maybe....?

Well there is the bugged wildland Decyronyessesvzswf.

But "barbarian cities" should be there.   We have the campgrounds, it's like the next evolution to those

MOM use to have independent states.

They made for interesting gaming.

Brown flags... you wanted them beat because they would send their own armies after you if you let them be.

Sometimes they would be quite powerful with a large army protecting it.

MOM was cool

I say bring the independent states in.
