[1.3] End Turn Crashes

Getting back into more regular play of this game. Preparing to start creating youtube videos. However, I'm starting to crash somewhat frequently.

I had 3 crashes today that happened after clicking end turn.

Can someone look at these dump files and let me know if there is anything I can do to prevent them? Also, is there a way I can view these dump files via a free tool or something? Thanks.

I've been getting seemingly random end turn CTDs. Sometimes, I can go 300 turns and not see one. Other times, they'll pop up all the time. Seems pretty random.

I just gave up on the game again because of end turn crashes. I looked at the debug.err of your top one and saw a bunch of these at the end:

Debug Message:  GFX-THREAD WARNING: Function marked as gfx thread only is being used in a different thread in file: e:\lh-elemental\Kumquat3D\Source\Renderer\Direct3D9\D3D9GFXBuffer.cpp

Which is what I'm seeing at the end of my crash debug.errs generally followed by only one or two AI action lines and then nothing. I'm guessing it's the cause of the crashes, but I dunno. Once I get to about turn 200-300 on a huge map game with like 10 AIs it basically becomes unplayable due to constant frequent crashes. It's not OOM though, it's crashing at like 1-1.5gb memory usage, often only one or two turns after I started the game and loaded up the last autosave, and I have a 64bit system with 8gb RAM.

I'm having it predominantly on huge/10 AI maps, too :/

My earlier medium-sized game with 5 players is still running fine, hundreds of turns in.

I'm glad that it's not just me that is getting these game crashes on huge maps with more than 7 players. I found this to be problematic in the original elemental, as well as FE.  I have no mods or anything else running in my win 7 64 bit.  I wonder if this game takes advantage of multicore processing?  I also get stuck with ridiculous hour glass when new heroes arrive and you have to choose one.

Actually this is one of the few 4x games that takes advantage of multicore processing. Thats why the turn times are instant.

Ok, I might have resolved my probelm. I played all day yesterday without a crash.

- I updated my drivers. I should mention that these were just released.

- I enabled all the previously disabled system services and startup programs. Mostly to resolve a missing service error for iTunes. I'm leaning towards the thought that this might have been the problem. I think one of the startup programs was nvidia experience.

- I razed a city that had 0/0/0 resources. I don't know if this had anything to do with it but it generated errors on the log

Could be luck or removing that city that let you play a bit without crashing. I have up to date drivers and GeForce Experience activated, though the later is a completely optional program that basically just checks for updates and allows you to set/download setting profiles for some mainstream games (of which I play none and have never had any chance to use said feature).

I decided I wasn't quite through the with game yet. I tried deleting all my custom factions and saved units in case something was wrong with one of them, side effect of this is I'm playing against much fewer AIs now, I'm not sure which if either allowed me to play an epic game to turn 300 today without crashing (probably the later), it was a terribly boring game where I abused towns and the treasury vault though so I quit and started a new one. When I start crashing again (likely after I create a few more custom factions to play against) I guess I'll try and look around the map for any bugged cities.

Yeah not sure. It's a huge difference though. I was getting about 5 turns in before crash after turn 100 (med map, 3 AIs ... an oops didnt realize it until I conquered half the map before I saw an AI.) Yesterday on the same save I played 100 turns. Yeah I doubt geforce experience had anything to do with it. And my drivers were a week old.

If you look at the log the game creates it should tell you if there is a bugged city.

Crashed on turn 175 of my next game, only 5 AIs, huge map but custom set to 40-50% water (instead of 10-30%) so it's more like a large or medium. Rules out map/AI complexity being the cause for me.

Amusingly the debug.err says there are 8 cities (out of 18) on the map with no yields. That's probably my fault, but I don't think it's causing the crashes.

Honestly I think my issue is likely mod related, which is why I didn't make my own thread or post any debugs/dumps, was just curious about the gfx thread lines in the debug.err since I keep seeing them in my crashes. I just really don't want to play the game without the mods I have, even to see if they are the cause.

Can you upload your save and let me know what mods you have? I'll try without mods too to see if it's a difference.

All I have is the mdmp, I didn't make any hard saves, was just relying on autosave, and I did end up clearing my folder and starting fresh to see if I still got any crashes. The mods I suspected were Heroic Pursuits (which I loved), the Additional Faction Traits and Races mod, Conclave Troops, and the Res Public mod, I think all of those were made for 1.2 and not "updated," but they appeared to work fine as far as I could tell. Then I had most of Parrotmath's mods, and the Demons and Wizards mod. I've read something as simple as an incorrect stat on an item can cause the game to crash when an AI receives/uses/equips it between turns, I guess the game doesn't have any safeties or checks to make sure something like that doesn't happen, so instead of loading the game and getting an error right away or just not having the item generate, you end up playing a couple hundred turns and randomly crashing.

I really loved all those mods and I wasn't even able to start a game without them, I just stared at the faction selection screen for like 10 minutes then quit. So I don't know if removing them helped.

Here's that last crash mdmp though.
