The UI request list!

The time preordained from the beginning of things has arrived.

It is time to do some UI cleanup.

So in this thread, please feel free to make reasonable requests on changes/enhancements to the UI.  These should be things that fix problems that really really bug you.

Thanks!

1.  Fix Mouse pointer bug that has been around since WoM and is plaguing a ton of people: https://forums.elementalgame.com/446915/page/1/#replies

2.  Make it so that when I left click and select a unit on the map I could then right click the city icon in my city tree (on the left side of the screen) that I want that unit to set a course for.  It would also be nice to be able to left click a unit in the unit tree  (on the left side of the screen) and then right click the city I want it to go to in the city tree (on the left side of the screen) to send the unit to that city.  This would save a ton of scrolling/jumping around the map to issue orders.

Pick me!  Pick me!

We created a community thread on UI wishes way back when: https://forums.elementalgame.com/442451/page/5/#3351901

Here's what I posted then:

#1 PRIORITY for me is that the Empire Tree needs to highlight the currently selected unit/town.  For micromanagers going through a long list in the empire tree, it's easy to lose your place and have to start over again.  FIX IT!  I had a nice lengthy post on this with pretty pictures but can't find it.  Brad probably deleted it.

Here are some others.

Need to know about bad enchantment on city: (I think you addressed this one a little bit already...)

https://forums.elementalgame.com/441986

Icons are too small on hero selection screen:

https://forums.elementalgame.com/441624

Selecting multiple treaties at a time:

https://forums.elementalgame.com/441636

Tool tips should compare currently equipped item:

https://forums.elementalgame.com/441628

EDIT:  I found a pic of what I submitted once for that #1 priority above.  I NEED some kind of faint glow or highlight in the empire tree of the currently selected unit or town... PLEASE!  I've been a faithful player and contributor since EWOM... grant me this one wish.  :-)

Let us use the unit designer to upgrade troops!

Fix that really annoying issue where if you are trying to select multiple units that are in a city via the Army pane (down the bottom of screen near the city details), and you hold down Shift.... the mouse shudders and jumps around a bit making it hard to pick the units you want.  No idea what would cause that but it's really annoying.

Make sure you can close all popups with the Esc key.... for example the City Details popup does not close when you press Esc.

Would really like a list somewhere, probably in the Goven popup... that listed all your heroes, their path, level, experience, location etc.

Probably doesn't count as a UI thing, but *please* get tactical summons to play their particles properly as described in this thread:

https://forums.elementalgame.com/446744/page/1/#3389629

 Thanks

Please make the changes that were part of Heavenfall's 'LargeUI' mod for Fallen Enchantress (Obviously the level-up screen change isn't relevant any longer):

https://forums.elementalgame.com/433402

...and 'Larger Unit Details' mod for LH:

https://forums.elementalgame.com/445198/page/1/

Ideally they would be toggle-able.

Additional UI changes I'd like

  • Broaden the degree of clothing options available for unit customization, at least for sovereigns.  No idea why the various restrictions exist for sovereigns (though I can understand the justification for regular units to keep them vaguely distinct per faction.)  It's apparently not for clipping reasons because they have clipping issues in the factions that can choose them already :P
  • Make a way to clean up old unit designs from the game launcher/settings UI, without having to load the faction in question or manually delete the XML files.  Bonus points if it gives an easy way to work around Steam sync just pushing them back down to you again.
  • Maybe this exists and I don't know how to do it, but giving some way of finding out the route that a unit would take to reach a destination without actually directing them to go there would be very helpful in working around the problems with units taking unexpected detours.
  • More customization options are always appreciated (clothing, backgrounds, etc.) but definitely lower priority than usability enhancements.
  • Some way to hide items from, highlight items in, or re-order the list of cities and units in the left of the main UI - by late game, you probably want to focus your efforts on a few of them, but it can be painful scrolling up and down the lists.  The Administration UI is better, but selecting units/cities there pops you back to the main UI, and then when you're done you have to go back and re-sort, etc. to find where you were in the Administration UI.  Note that this would really be a workaround - I think a re-thinking of this UI feature altogether would be better - but adding hiding, highlighting, or sorting the list may be easy whereas a total replacement is obviously not.

I'm still having problems identifying opponents.  The colors aren't distinct enough, and the border outlines on the map don't match the color swatches enough for me to identify them quickly, if at all.  Also, the names and the logos (shields?) don't connect without looking them up.  What I think would help with this, and wouldn't be too hard to do I imagine, would be if there was a small copy of the logo (shield) for the opponent in the faction power chart.  The smily/frowny faces are useful, but putting a small copy of the factions logo right near the name of the faction would help a lot.   (This would help because when I look at a city, what I see there is the factions shield, not the name, so connecting the name with the shield would be very helpful.)

- Not sure if this falls under UI, but I would love a menu system off of the main menu where you can pre-select which units/heroes/sovereigns are to made available to yourself and to the AI, and to which AI, in a given game. Options to 'edit', 'disable' or 'delete' these aswell. Also an option to 'disable' the defaults if you don't want them to see play (deleting them may be unforgivably bad).

The system could be organized in a split screen tree-design.

  • On the right hand side you can see which factions have access to which units/heros/sovereigns.  The tree can be expandable to help keep the work area clean. Faction -> Sovereign -> Units/Heroes. Each item could have a checkbox that would disable the availablity of said unit...if you did not want it in the next game.
  • On the left hand side can be a list of all available units/heros/sovereigns....all editable. Perhaps an option to 'make copy' if you want to slightly change the design.
  • Therefore, designing a unit could be done from here....and associating it with factions could be as simple as click and drag. (or an option to right-click and 'make available for all')

- As an aside, I'd love for the physical directory structure where the units/heros/sovereigns are placed to include another set of subdirectory to help organize those custom unit files even further into their factions. Trying to keep 200 units organized from one directory, which belongs to which faction, all in my head is a very painful and confusing prospect.

- When obtaining a new item there are currently only 2 options: Equip and Ok. Equip will equip the item without giving you the knowledge that the new item is better than the previous and then moves on to the next unit. Ok will do nothing and then moves on to the next unit. I offer up the suggestion that this menu to be expanded into 3 options:

  • Equip: Opens the Equip screen so that you can make an informed decision as to whether you want to use the item obtained.
  • Use: Consumes/Equips the item...as the original equip currently does. (players are smart enough to know that if they use chainmail....it isn't going to be consumed...and if they use healing potion...it will be consumed).
  • Ok: As the original Ok.

I really really would like an option to be able to make informed decisions about items I pick up without having to go and hunt for my unit afterwards again.

- Toggled pedestrians for 32bit machines. I miss my little peeps.

Sine I'm not a coder of any kind, I have no idea what is 'reasonable'. I shall leave it that to you...since that term is subjective.  ;)

3 things. (Because all good things comes in 3's)

#1 Strategic spells. The spellbook is a mess and annoying to use when you want to cast 10+ spells during your turn. Hotkeys would fix that easily, but I would rather see a spellbar or something similar to what Tactical spells have in battle.

#2 Army management. "V" for get out of city army! is slow, and waits on the city buildings before it works. That means you have to start building before getting out of the city, and you don't always want to do that in that order. Removing troops and merging is also a mess. Any solutions to this would be awesome.

#3 Hostiles management. I keep having to reload because I keep getting false alerts and miss that harass unit entering unnoticed. Remove threat from caravans, freezed/tremored troops, and spotlight new threats more visibly maybe? Don't think this should be too hard to do.

If you do these things, I would be very happy. Any love to the xml side of things would be awesome as well.

Please god, let me select all the units in a City without having to shift-click them!

Or let me select them another way. I just hate having to hold shift to select town units. Maybe another selection screen or something?

Or better yet, add a "+" and a "-" on each icon, allowing me to click them. Or right click each unit to select or deselect them.

Please.

Off the top of my head:

Keys:

R to build road

C (or something else) to continue quequed movement

A screen like the Kingdom Report but for an overview of Champions

Seconding and thirding hotkeys for strategic spells and a 'select all' for units in cities.

Also support having the unit desgin screen to upgrade units. So our high level early units could become mounted and have equipment added, but the above first please!

Finally, could we please be able to view other windows when presented with an upgrade choice for a trophy or city level up. Occasionally I am unsure where I want to place a trophy or which upgrade would be most beneficial and it would help if I could open the empire management screen to compare cities.

Little things....

The selected unit pathing display should not be there when I am hovering over a button or element of the UI

When I select a city, I should always have a left/right arrow to scroll between cities.  If you were really good, the darn arrows would not jump and down just because the build lists are different.  I have my mouse over the arrows and would love to scroll two cities over.  Nope, the arrows moved out from under me.

Everybody is asking for hotkeys.  My request is a center screen on selected unit.

Double click on a city in the Govern display gets you to the build queue.

Want to see all details of champions I am recruiting.

In summary view of any one city, please include unrest level.

Leaving negotiations seems to take too many steps.  I'm done talking; I want a STOP TALKING NOW button.

I want to trade between champions if they are both in my territory.  Much too much fuss to bring them together, especially on big maps.

Not sure if it is a UI element but I want to select and display any one character on the map in a large window for looks and inspection.  Also, for showing off to anyone looking over my shoulder.

These have been requested elsewhere but here they are again in this thread:

- Notification for Neutral Armies in your territory so you can click through them.

- Notification when an Enemy AI takes an outpost from you.

New things:

- The "Oh no you lost a resource 'Go to'" option that pops up between turns when an enemy crashes your resource sometimes doesn't take you to where the event happened as the turn keeps processing. it might be nice to have a notification that you can click through on the right side.

- Maybe a "switch" for road builders in addtion to a hotkey.  Toggle the switch and the unit makes roads everywhere he steps, toggle it off and he doesn't?

- Since there can get to be a whole lot of things going on each turn, especially if you add the notifications for neutral and outposts in addtion to the stuff that's already there, how about an opaque "TURN LOG" window that you can pull up over the screen that you can click on items and it will center the map on where that item happened, in case you want to review.

All of this plus brighter movement squares with better contrast in the tactical battle screen. Oh...and being able to change my key bindings would be excellent.

1) On the main map, I would love to have arrows on the city info, army info, and outpost info bar on the lower left hand. That way, I could click through all my cities, rushing, changing production etc, without ever leaving the strategic screen. Manage my armies, etc.

2) Give me those same arrows on the outpost upgrade screen. The screen that takes you away from the strategic screen.

3) Give me an upgrade all choice for elemental temples/shrines and also for outpost upgrades.

4)  Allow me to somehow dispel enchantments from the strategic screen. Either with a right click, or a shift click or  something.

5) Allow rushing from the govern screen.

Give me a +/- button on the minimap and tile info screen on the lower right and one on the faction power chart on the upper right (just like for units, cities, and quests).

How about being able to press ENTER to save a game in addition to clicking the save button.

A feature request UI wishlist. Would it be possible to add another generic unit type to the custom models.

Currently you support

<GenericUnitType_Male>

<GenericUnitType_Female>

<GenericUnitType_Other>

I would like to see

<GenericUnitType_Other2>

or better yet a male / female switch option that will transfer from Male / Female models and a GenericUnitType_Other Male / Female option.

Just on a wish list of additions to the UI (might be an improvement)
