I have noticed that if you have a spear unit behind a friendly unit and there is an enemi infront of your friendly unit you can target impale on your friendly unit to hit the enemi but without doing damage to your friendly unit ... Idon't know if this is a bug , but it seems to me . I think I'm playing with the las beta activated .
Sounds like the way it's always worked. You'd think that you couldn't target past a friendly unit, but that's what spears do.
not a bug. dont impale your own guys. thats kinda a key thing if your in battle. 
Also dont shoot a fireball at them, or target that single enemy surrounded by your own guys with a catapult.
Couldnt resist. sorry.
Speaking of... The AI need to know about the catapult thing also. They help me out more than they hurt by wiping out the guys around me.
It seems a little weird impale an enemi trespassin a compani of your own guys without doing any damage ... I really thought it was a bug .
