How can I retreat?

I could have sworn that in earlier iterations you could retreat from battle by moving your units backwards off the far side of a map. Maybe I am wrong. In any case, I do not see that happening here and am wondering if this is intentional or if I am missing something.

One reason I am asking is that I just had an awful battle with a much stronger AI opponent, whom I could eventually beat by simply running away in loops around the map and shooting from afar. It took a long, boring time. My guess is that it must have been close to 100 turns. Is it a "feature" that combat can theoretically go on indefinately? I would certainly like to see retreating be at least an option in some circumstances, even if it means that all retreating units suffer an automatic HP penalty or injury (including non-champion units).

Some characters have an "Escape" ability. You can also get an Escape scroll. Normally though combat continues until one side is dead.

In WoM you could escape by running away.  They've removed that feature before FE was released.

Ah it was WoM then.

Wonder why removing the ability was done, I do think it should be an option, even if it comes with drawbacks.

You can choose it as a sovereign trait now as well.

I think they removed it because you should care about when you attack. It was too easy to get some archers, whittle the enemy down, run away when they get close, rinse and repeat.

...and I'm glad because games like this don't need extra cheese.
