Move but don't attack == get defensive bonuses?

Abilities such as "+10 Defense when Defending".

Does this apply if unit moves, but does not attack an opponent?

(I wish the game made this more obvious.)

Yes, it does. You can see this by mouse hovering over that unit once its turn is over. You'll be able to see its main stats in the pop up window. And you'll see that its defense rating is higher, make sure to take note of unit's defense at start of turn (before moving or skipping turn)

Simply, yes. But it realy only reffers to your unit not doing anything at its turn and defence mode is engaged. ..you can move, enter defence mode, and stay that way with out moving again. Best with counter attack blades as they don't break the defence mode and is what they are best for. Double counters, the Athican blades, are supreme in this mode.

So, what I'm getting from this is: Simply hitting the "pass" button to end your turn automatically sends *any* unit into "defense mode"?

Or is this only for units that have specific defensive bonuses?  Either way, they probably should be more clear about this.

Leo and CM, thx.  I've sometimes seen those higher defense numbers when hovering, and thought it was some bizarre bug  - hadn't yet associated it with the unit's Traits, and what action they had or hadn't done on prior term. Now I know to look for those numbers.

Any unit by default gains +5 Physical Defense if you skip or don't use an attack.  However there are traits that add to this +5 bonus.  Also, a fairly recent change is that the entire defending side starts in defense mode (even before their first turn in a battle), so even if you or the enemy are faster, the defenders can't be attacked without the defense bonus.

Now *that's* exactly what I was looking for: to-the-point concrete info!  Thanks, Steven.

The only thing with regards to the defense bonus I'm not sure about is what happens when a unit spends a turn with a condition (like Dazed or Stunned, or even Prone) though.  It may require the turn to be purposefully skipped to get the defense bonus, or it may not.  Someone else will have to fill us in on that, or you can find it out for us. =)

End of Victor5's quote

actually i made a suggestion during the beta of LH to rename the pass button to "defend" to make that connection more obvious. i guess that would have been a smart move :)

oh and btw. don't neglect shields - shields also give large defense bonuses "while defending". (+5/10/15/20 for wooden/round[bronze]/kite/tower shields). even low tech units with defense trait and a wooden shield can get to ~30+ defense, which makes them almost immune to the puny attacks of mites, darklings, wolves, bandits etc; also defender champions get +25 defense while defending since they also have a second rank of the defensive trait, so even a low level defender (level 4) with some leather gear can make it into the 40+ defense range
