You've Ruined Civilization For Me

I tried playing Civilization and just can't now. With Legendary Heroes, it feels like there's ALWAYS something to do. While Civilization (V) is a great game, it feels a little empty without quests and tactical combat now.

In order for Civilization 6 to feel like a new entry, it will need something similar to your quest system or something else that prevents me from just hitting "End Turn". I rarely do that in LH.

I'm hoping that the next expansion pack will bring back some CIV love, but right now I just can't play it over LH. Bravo, Stardock. You've made Civilization feel like the inferior product. That's freakin hard to do.

When I first encountered FE and played the beta for the first time, I realized that Stardock had created a 4x turn based game that finally addressed the issue of making the beginning of the game less boring and rather interesting and not just a turn push for the most part.

I kind of feel the same way. I love CIV 5 and have hundreds of hours playing it, and still play on a regular basis. But I too find myself playing tug and pull in trying to decide which one to play first, LH or CIV 5. They are both great games and fun to play. If I don't get and hour in of each of them first thing in the morning with a good cup of coffee, my day is already off to a bad start. I wish I could "ctrl n" that

you're comparing different genres...

That would be the same as turning off barbarians and lions and such. Civ does have those elements in the game and thus one cannot turn off monsters. I would agree that turning off quests and goodie-huts then compare, but not the monsters as they exist in both games.

They are separate games and I wasn't comparing Civ to FE, I was comparing the turn based 4x games I've played to FE:LH

I've played

GalCiv 1

GalCiv 2

Civ 3

Civ 4

Civ 5

Warlock

Lords of Magic (I think that was a 4x game... was a long time ago though)

Endless Space

Legends of Pegasus --- not recommended ;)

Each of these games are fun and they are really hard to compare to each other

I like what FE brought to the table. As they have succeeded in enhancing certain mechanics, and if you play without ALL GOODIE huts and leave only resource locations (mind you I like to experiment with mods), I still like FE over the other ones, simply because of the multi-city tiles that one can create and watch your cities mold to the world.

maybe I should have said no leveling up and only auto-resolve instead of no quests/monsters

it's been so long since I've played single-player civ (AI sucks)... in multiplayer we turn off almost everything

when I play FE I just feel that the skill selection and tactical battles are such a huge focus and these are more common with tactics/role-playing games than with 4X

it's just semantics though. I agree that civ feels dull, but not because of the 4X comparisons... if that makes sense

really I can take or leave the level up scene, doesn't produce anything for me and the auto-resolve feature... although the tactical battle add to the game, it is not the driving point to the game. I also suggested a long time ago in a thread on FE that people will not feel this is a 4x game for this same reason, but I was assured that it was a 4x game, which it is at it's core.

No, I'm not. These are very much similar games. They're both 4X games. They both scratch a similar itch. I just feel like Legendary Heroes makes that scratch...scratchier.

They're set in different settings. They definitely approach the base game mechanics in very different ways, though. I still like Civilization, but it's just a little less engrossing now. I want Civ to have tactical combat and leader units now, haha!

To oversimplify, LH is Civ with magical explorer units and monsters for barbarians.  The whole eXploration phase is eXpanded, in content and in length.  I always like the exploration phase of Civ, so this is even better.

With Erischild's point, I've just realized that my favorite X of the 4 is DEFINITELY the exploration phase, followed by the extermination phase.

4X games should focus more on the exploration phase. There should be more to it, too. That's why I love LH. I really enjoy finding new strategic resources, quests, badlands, enemies....

If it weren't for the micromanagement absurdities, I'd always play on huge maps. Can we please get govenors in the next expansion? Or ways to combat that late-game tedium like Civ V does with puppets?

But definitely auto govenors.
