How to use item

Ok, I've never played this before and am giving it a go. I cannot figure out how to use an item in combat. For example, I have a vase that I can hurl at an enemy to do 20 points of fire damage. I cannot equip/use it on the main map because it says it is for combat only...but in combat, I don't see anything that I can click to use an item. Couldn't find it in the manual and I am sure it's in plain sight.

Items that you can only use in combat are listed under the "Item" button on the bottom left side of the screen.

Also note that some "equipped' items or possessed items grant the bearer the 'ability' to do some extraordinary things. For example: 'teleport across the field, land, and do c8-12 lighting damage to all units adjacent to landing unit. Some let you cast certain spells (Cloak - blindness) with no mana cost. Some of the items are really cool, and may affect your characters approach in battle.
