[0.87] Experience Monster versus Races

I'm finding that monsters give much more experience than the races do.  I had not noticed before, but in my last game I had to defend like crazy against almost all the other races.  I would have epic battle after epic battle and get maybe 10 xp.  I could then fight an ogre or something similar, beat it or them easily, and get 35-50 xp.  Against races I just didn't think I was getting the reward (xp) for the risk.  Maybe xp is only based on level if so, maybe it should also be based on the armor, weapons, and amount of hp.  Fighting plate mail early can be tough.

I was playing a huge map on hard/hard.

I'm liking everything else.  Great game!

Yes, the troops and heroes of the other nations give shit experience compared to monsters so there is a certain point in the game where you kind of stop being able to level champions above a single digit level.

If you set up a map with dense AI factions you will probably not level as much as you would on a map with more space.

I'm playing on a medium map with 5 AI factions and normal/balanced everything else.  About 250 turns in my sov is level 15 and I have other heroes approaching level 10.

@OP: Yes, relatively you get very little XP from AI units.  Maybe too little.

The XP disparity between monsters and AI forces the following game-play:

Keep peace with AI while one army of doom roams the map hunting monsters.  When bored turn on AI and raze city after city till bored again then cast spell of making.

I think you just described my most recent game!

I don't mind that monsters give more XP, but for the challenge of fighting huge AI armies versus killing a cave bear, the XP awarded really should reflect that. I'm also unsure of the amount of XP awarded by defeating AI champs/sovereigns. I think that may be a bit on the low side, too.
