vetern units get upgraded training

Please create a way for already created units to go to a Fortress and receive upgraded training that was not available when the troop was first trained.  For example:  Player has several troops that have gained levels of experience, but newly trained units (because of upgrades in the fortress) get additional talents.  Eventually, this makes veteran units so outdated - they have field experience, but can never get the new training available.  Since we can name units, this would add incentive to not just sacrifice units cause they are so out classed by newly trained units. It would add lots of color as named troops go for more training and can continue to be the best.

A refit option would be very nice. Instead of building a unit from zero, destroy the existing unit and discount 80% of its production value towards de new unit.

In fact that's how IMHO Upgrades should work, no more insta-upgrade for a few Gildar. I mean... instantly change weapons it's ok, but instantly upgrade the number of troops isn't

yes.  i agree.  What I'm also interested is in the 'refitted' unit retaining some, if not all its battle earned experience.

That makes a lot of sense. I simply forgot about keeping the XP. I think the most fair would be:

Refitted Unit XP = Old Unit XP * (Old Unit Production Cost / Refitted Unit Production Cost)

Capped at 1, of course, just in case some strange refit has lower cost in the new unit.

I think this is a bad idea. Fortress training abilities are already so good, they don't need any more distribution to extra units. This will favor the player over the AI, and I think that would hurt the game at this point.

Second, using troops who have weaknesses to offset their experience gives them more flavor, from where I stand. Isn't it a good gameplay choice- the quick, better trained hotshots who will die with one hit, or the clumsy old guard who can take an unnatural beating? Both cost wages, where to best keep putting your money?

In a related thought, upgrading unit size should have a level penalty- that newcoming sixth troop didn't slay any dragons, the five veterans before him did.

I thougt the AI knew what it was taught (aka programmed). Despite I am no expert in AI programming I don't see why the could not be told how to proper use to refit technique. Specially because other 4x games from long ago already make use of the upgrade feature, which is a refit itself.

I am no expert either, but just because it was easy in Civ2 doesn't mean it's easy to make happen here - especially now that so much code is written, changing one cog here can potentially cause cascading unintended errors elsewhere.

My real reason against it is, I think it's more a gameplay negative than positive. Despite the joy of total control in games, hard choices between two negatives is (almost) always more interesting that just getting one positive.

Couldn't/shouldn't the XP gained from a vetran unit be cashed in at a fortress for available fortress perks ??? ie: De-level you unit in exchange for different abilities.

Definately worth considering...

Agree with the OP. The mechanism should favour keeping veteran troops, which makes keeping them more important.

AI difficulties notwithstanding.
