Strange black blobs of triangular shape sometimes appear in unit portraits for me. Here, it happened on my sovereign during some light shopping:

Looks like a problem with the shadows rendering incorrectly. Two suggestions- 1. Try disabling shadows in the Video options section. I can't verify it right now, but I believe you should be able to do that. 2. Is your video card driver running the latest driver? What kind of GPU do you have?
I am running with shadows off.
Using 512Mb Radeon card.
Is it my video card, if this usually doesn't happen? It seems to occur, then the problem goes away after a few turns (or maybe after I re-load).
I have a Radeon card and haven't noticed it. Mine is an HD 7770. What's your version? Do you have the update from January installed?
Sounds like it's not shadows. Suppose you could try turning off anti-aliasing. That seemed to cause some issues.
