retreat from battle?

I know that escape scrolls work currently, but I think this needs to be modified.  As is the game plays out this way:

Get secondary hero, secondary hero ONLY sits in a city to lower unrest for the rest of the game.

Now I may be missing a basic command that everyone knows, if this is the case we need a tool tip or something that explains this.  You should always have the option to retreat from a battle, however there should be a decent (50/50) chance that your troops die, with a much lower chance that your heroes do, or some complex equation you guys figure out based on army size, movement speed initiative etc.  Either this or you should be able to purchase escape scrolls, they are essentially not worth the investment if they are guaranteed to suffer permanent negative modifiers just because the dice gods hate me.  Actually I think that would work perfectly, make escape scrolls one of the starting items you can buy, just make it cost a prohibitive amount, 80-100 so getting a free one is still a nice reward, but allows me to play my heroes.

Access to an escape skill in a hero tree (perhaps assassin or commander) is something I've suggested, and would be very easy to implement.

You could also redesign all the tatical battle maps and add in escape tiles...

escape tiles actually sound like a really great idea.  Of course I'm imagining a box canyon on the map, enemy comes at you, only one escape tile, and its behind their army. 8C

As far as a skill in a tree I would instead consider the skill something like scouting the terrain under assassin or general, units have +1 initiative the first turn of combat and +10% chance to survive a retreat.  Putting in just a retreat skill would make it required for all non sovereign heroes for me.

Or here's an idea, after X injuries you gain the skill cowardice that allows only this hero to retreat.

If there is an escape ability, it would need like a 10 turn cooldown.

I'm thinking escape tiles could be abused by champs/sovereigns.  Especially if they aren't running around with an army to lose.  How many times I seen ceresa with just her shadow worg...

When you get an enemy champ, you wan't to put it out of commission for a time, not just have it constantly escape and pillage everything in the area, likewise if I could do that, it would feel cheep imo.
