0.8 Feedback

My initial thoughts on LH after having played a while with the 0.80 build.

I like

Heroes are acquired via Fame now.  I haven't quite decided if I like the timing of the heroes arrival, maybe it would be nice to have some randomization to when they show up so you didn't always KNOW a certain building was going to net you a hero.

I don't like

The swarm mechanic....it is too easy to abuse.  It is hard for me to evaluate the combat balance in general because swarm mechanics seem to be more effective than other factors.  Obviously stronger units are better, but you always want to have the most and fastest units to abuse swarm.

Some of the weapon special attacks didn't make sense to me.  Spear's piercing attack that goes thru 2 ranks of enemies seems implausible and more suited to a lightning style attack.  Spears should probably have a high damage critical attack since they poke internal organs rather than clubs having the double damage attack.  I didn't think the old system was bad before these special attacks were added.

I know this beats half the point of LH, but I don't really like the promotion tree.  When we had random choices of promotions, you had to make a decision because there were usually 2-3 you wanted out of your selections.  You might not see a rare promotion again for a while, so you had to make a choice.  With the predictable promotion tree, you just determine the optimal promotion path and repeat it ignoring all other promotions.

While I believe this is a valid point when looking at the progression of a single hero from game to game, in context I think this arguement would fall apart. In theory, when FE:LH is complete, there will be a variety of heroes available and no single promotion path will be ideal for every hero.

In actuality.....well, we'll have to wait and see what happens....

I agree that acquiring heroes would be nicer if i couldn't tell when exactly i was going to get one.

Also agree with the spear impaling multiple targets, i mean spears would have a bonus of some high damage attack or maybe even sweep and hit multiple targets directly in front of you. But to go through somebody and hit another target behind them is a little much for me.

As far as the skill tree, i think that's far better then the randomized selection you got before, that's one thing i hated about FE. i mean really hated. You go all that way to get a level and then you get a bunch of randomized skills and none of them are in anyway related to how you wanted to spec your guy. It would frustrate the heck out of me. Did i mention i hated the random skill selection?

I certainly don't think the same promotion path is best for every hero, but I do think you will end up with cookie cutter builds.

I guess a lot of people really hated the randomized promotions, but I never found I had any problems making good heroes....there was always a couple good things to pick.  I really prefer the randomized method, but it seems I'm in the minority?

Well, truthfully, I didn't mind the random picks. heck, they told you up front what was rare and what was common - so you knew what you might see again, vs. what you might need to grab now because it probably won't come up again.

well with the randomized skills i wouldn't be surprised if you'd find it pretty evenly split. For me there are just certain things that i want and certain things i don't and since it's 100% luck based and well frankly i have bad luck lol. I like the path approach better just because there isn't any guessing or luck involved.

Also for some reason i find heroes weaker now, maybe it's just me but they just don't seem to be as good as they have in the original FE and i don't think it's due to the skills that i've selected. I've seen others make the same statement.

More then not my heroes are now just there for supporting purposes and not a mainstream combat role. In armies i have them sit in the back casting heal or other buff/debuff spells (assuming i can afford the mana cost) or equip them with some kind of missile weapon. Good bows are now a must have.

As far as the way spears are handled, I think the present system is a good way to simulate the advantage of polearms and that is reach.  A bonus to defense could also account for keeping the enemy at bay as a result of the reach advantage. This could be enhanced by massed spearman forming a defensive line.

Damaging a second unit should only occur when the first unit has suffered significant damage.  The idea being that the initial damage allows you to continue a charge through the damaged unit.

Should also be an acquired trait that's earned by experience or training..
