[.50 +.75+.85 UI bug] Tech tree weirdness [FIXED in .87]

The education tech in my latest game is blank and does not show a pre-req line:

I have not seen this in previous games.

If I exit and load a save it doesn't show the problem.

Just got the same issue.

It also blanked out Administration immediately to the left.

Happens to me also.  A reset usually resets the issue when I can't stand it anymore.

Can also confirm this.  Oddly, closing the window and reopening it "sometimes" fixes it.

This is a known issue.  Although, I'm pretty sure it has to do with memory.

Memory or video memory?  I had reloaded several saved games without exiting LH, which I remember caused memory leakage in the FE beta but I thought had been fixed.

This has happened in about 1/4 of the games I have played so far. Fortunately, the bottom of the window still shows the name and info on the tech.

Variations of this happen to me randomly in FE as well

Happens to me as well. I do not think it has to do with memory. It happens more often when I start a new game without restarting the game, or loading a save from a different faction without restarting the game. I have a Radeon 6870 video card with 1GB of memory.

Happens to me, too. I have a very powerful card and system, too.

it's tough because it seems difficult (impossible?) to reproduce reliably... like, when people load saves it sounds like it clears the issue up. If anyone manages to notice any case where it always happens (after opening the screen a lot, after playing long time, after doing some specific thing) it would be immensely helpful. Otherwise we will just be keeping out eyes open

Thanks for the help either way

the best i've been able to tell is that it happens to me after a long period of having the game running.  for me it's a couple of hours of play or if i left the game on while i was doing other things with my family.

It does have to do with loading a game within a game.  I started LH from Steam and loaded my last save.  I then checked the tech tree and it was fine.  I then exited the tech tree window, hit escape to get to the main menu, and loaded the same game over again without exiting the game.  The tech tree looked like this:

My saved game is here.

When opening the tech tree after loading the save the 2nd time, you might have to grab and drag the tech tree to see the problem.  You can see that there's a string "Education" in the above screencap that has floated up under the Civilization icon - that's the label that belongs in the blank box under Cooperation.

I really don't think this is a memory issue.

System Memory: 16GB
In use at time of bug: 11GB

GPU Memory: 4GB
In use at time of bug: 1.4GB

I just fired up LH fresh, after closing out of Steam completely.  Started off by opening a saved game, everything looked fine.  I checked all three branches of research and dragged each one of them around, all the tech titles moved with their icons correctly, none were missing.   Without doing anything else in that game, I simply loaded the same saved game file again and upon that second time, I saw the issue.  2 labels were completely missing off techs in the Civilzation tree.

*Edit*

And I've just reproduced it now following the same steps.  Close out of steam completely, restart and launch LH.  Upon first time of loading a saved game, the tech trees look fine.  Upon second load (from within the game), the bug is happening again.

*2nd Edit*

Game was running at 4x AA, which I had dropped it down to by request from Stardock.  I could drop it to 2x and keep testing for it, but I'm thinking it unlikely to matter.  Let me know.

Looks like that particular graphic/file wasn't created properly to handle 8x AA

I've seen the same problem and I have AA turned off entirely.  Always have.  So that's not it.

My AA is set at 2x, so I don't think that's the problem.

This problem is still present in .75.  Unlike the scenario I gave in a previous post on how to recreate the problem, this time I saw it without loading a game from within a game.  Exiting the game and loading a save doesn't reproduce the problem, so I'm not posting a save.

Here's a debug.err in case you want to see my display driver info.

That looks like an early game, did you use Ctrl-N at all to get a decent start? I know that also causes it, it's basically doing the same thing that makes reloading cause it. They don't clear everything from memory when you Ctrl-N or reload a save, in fact they keep most of it loaded, probably so it will reload faster, but this is one of the many issues it causes.

I've never seen this happen in a game I haven't reloaded or used Ctrl-N on.

Another likely way to cause it is to load a game, exit to the menu, then start a new game. I imagine that works much like Ctrl-N. I haven't tried it though.

You're right, I had used ctl-n.  Thanks for pointing that out.

Yeah I get this, definitively from using Ctrl-N.... possibly when going back to the Main Menu and starting a new game also.

This is still happening in .85, I hit control-n in my latest game and see the problem as in the previously posted screen shots.

Yep I just got this again too.

@Kael - any ideas on this one, it's really nasty  :(

I was getting this in .75, but have not encountered it in .85 yet, and I ctrl-N like a madman. Have you tried validating your game files via Steam? A lot of the weird glitches seem to have gone away since I did this after patching. No idea if there's a connection, but it's worth a try, only takes a few minutes.

Right click on LH in your Steam library, choose "properties", then "local files", then "verify integrity of game cache", and let it do it's thing. Any missing files will be repaired when you restart the game. The validator found 4 missing files after I patched to .85, FWIW.

I did this after the last patch, will try it again though good suggestion.
