Newbie trying to understand Tuidjy's walkthroughs

Full of dumb questions

Trying to understand the finer points of this game by reading Tuidjy's walkthrough, but I'm feeling more lost. I'm trying to get a better grip on strategy but so many of the mechanics go right over my head without a deeper explanation.

First off, how does he start with 1000 gold and seemingly rushes very city upgrade? I pick up my first champion, drop my taxes to zero like he does, and if I rush a single pioneer I'm broke in a few turns from -1 unit upkeep.

Are any of the default Sovereigns worth playing? Feels like he's handpicked a number of great traits and thrown them all into one custom guy (casts ideal spells on city essences). I've been trying to play Relias, but aside from free champion recruitment I haven't figured out what he's good for (no idea how that quest map things works).

I get a bit lost around turn 30 or so, I understand what he's doing, but not really sure why because of my very limited game experience.

Are there any walkthroughs like the this done for very new players, that really explain the basics of why they're taking the actions they are?

Tuidjy did a great job on his content: well-written, thoughtful, and tightly organized. It's very outline-linear, though, and this makes it feel abstract to some people. If you're among these, you might try going to Youtube, and looking under "Fallen Enchantress" and "gameplay." There are several available, and the more concrete, hands-on experience could be better suited to your needs. EddieGamerLP is more laid back than some--always a good mark for me--and if you don't mind the French-sounding accent, you can learn a lot through his slow but effective methods.

Consider going back to Tuidjy after you try a couple of those gameplay videos. I think you'll find you learn a lot more from him at that point. Good luck.

Personally I start each new game with a custom sovereign (often leading a customized race, too); I just like combining the traits in different ways. Also I like every race to be able to build scrying pools, because they are great.

There is a wealthy trait that can be picked during sovereign creation, which provides +500 gold (in earlier versions it provided +1000 gold, which might account for the video). At one point, running with zero taxes was a very beneficial strategy - one could gain income from buildings such as the marketplace. This no longer works; the marketplace provides taxable gold, but if your tax rate is zero, that does not help. I would tend to stick to the 40% tax rate (22% unrest), and build some buildings that reduce unrest.

Tuidjy's posts are a bit outdated at this point. The AI and some game mechanics have changed significantly since he posted those guides.  Not to take anything away from Tuidjy's work...

I suspect we'll some new ones after LH appears.

One other thing about Tuidjy's game play is that all the stops are pulled out - full steam ahead. I saw tricks and techniques used that even I never thought of. Tuidjy shows a very high level of play.

Tuidjy is definitely a power gamer, meaning he will use all of the 'best' combos to show how OP those combos are in practice.

I think his posts and points were better for showing balance and exploit of the system rather than how to play the game.

Yes, ^^^ T is a power gamer. I have played strategy games for over 30 years, and he taught me a new trick!

Curious,

Is his strategy of designing a sovereign/race with adventurer, wanderlust, training henchman and then purchasing and running quests over and over still viable in 1.32?

@KindaDurkish i've only played a few games of FE, but my sense is that it would depend on the map, game settings, and your starting location.
