Competition cometh......NOT! lol

http://www.ageofwonders.com/aow3live/

While Triumph Studios did make some fair graphics they never mastered a challenging AI and thus their games of the Age series were mediocre at best. I played the entire series and seriously the 1st one was their best one except for the fact it had no random map generator thus one had to play the same crappy maps over n over. Shadow Magic had the random map generator but did away with about half of the AI opponents one could have and the maps were smaller and the AI total crap. Where they screwed up is with if you eliminate any main wizard on the map the ENTIRE faction was lost. That's totally stupid really. The AI never was good at building wizards towers that allowed them to come back, therefore games were over before they started because of the ease it was to eliminate them before they even thought about building a 2nd wizards tower.

It's another money grub at the series because of those who don't wish for a challenge who will buy it because it's part of the series and how much they loved stomping the ai. lol

I'll stick with FE because I KNOW Froggy will make the AI as best as it can be in the long term. Triumph will take their money and run just like they did with Age of Wonders:SM.

Well, thanks for the link.

Actually, AoW SW is a very dear game to me and some of the maps and scenarios made by the community are great.AI could be better, but that's the fact for FE as well.

I like FE alot, especially the modding simplicity. I also believe Legendary Heroes are a step in right direction.

However, I'm sorry to say FE hasn't been able to grip me in such a way as some SW games. And I hoped it would.

So if AoW 3 is an improved SW I'd be VERY happy.

As I said, I KNOW Froggy will make this AI better than anything Triumph will come up with. Their AI's were never even as good as MOM's. They never improved them either in the few patches they did of the entire series. Now they are saying because they are using multithreading (quad core) that it improves the AI. Lol In WHAT WAY? One thing I've learned about the MAJORITY of DEVELOPERS they NEVER like to talk about the AI much. You'll get a ONE LINER from time to time but that's about it. Why? Because they KNOW their AI's suk hahahah. Now Froggy you get LOTS of info from him about the AI....cause he doesn't want his AI to SUCK!

why you Sir gets the privilege of writing all your text in bold and large font? This is aggressive behavior, particularly in regard to the unfair disparaging of the fine game which is Age of Wonders.

I'm really looking forward to playing AoW3. I don't think anyone who is a fan of Fantasy 4X TBS games should come down on any "side" before the competition is even released. It is in fact possible to like both games.

I'm looking forward to AOW3 myself.

That said, I am skeptical on the AI.

mainly because when I open up this text box the font is less than a centimeter high like this  and I can't read it. Sooooo I change it to THIS SIZE so I can read it and don't have to ruin my eyes trying to type what I want to say. ;) Aggressive behavior is becoming more and more active all around the globe. The world is changing if you don't change with it you get left behind. The LAMBS will be SLAUGHTERED muaahhahahahahah ;) But, thanks for your thoughts Dr. PHIL! lmao

Agreed.
Sometimes I play games to look through the amazing magic system that have been constructed, or other game mechanics.

I'll probably end up disappointed, but they already got my money... *sigh*. Well, at least now there's a chance that I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Please don't flame AOW here.  I happen to be a pretty big fan of it.  The more successful it is, the more people will be drawn into this genre.

Oh frogboy, don't you get it?  You can only love one game in a genre.  It's even in the bible, "A man can only have one game, if he has two, he will love one and hate the other, Amen".  Don't bother looking that one up, it's pretty hard to find...Sure, in reality, many gamers will buy and enjoy multiple games of the same genre, but not on the internet.  On the internet, it's "Civ V or WoM", "Warlock or Fallen Enchantress", "AoW3 or LH".  Pick a side!  You are with us or you are against us!!!!

There's truth in this. Look at fighters- more SF fans means more folks who will look at  good fighters like Virtua Fighter.  (though it's funny how most of the newer VF players tend to be the sorts who talk about waifus way too much.  ^_^)

AOW is a pretty mainstream brand, and many folks here got into fantasy TBS from that game.

Just like any other game of this type.  I am hoping for the best, expect the worst, and will wait to read AoW 3 forums and other game related forums I visit to decide if I will purchase.  Though I know sometimes I can't help myself and buy it regardless thinking that I will make my own decision, which may turn out bad or good.

You know you can hold CTRL when you scroll to change text size? That way you can read (maybe you should get glasses or sit closer to your monitor) without making it a pain in the ass for the rest of us to read.

I do not like this post at all. What you are saying is completely wrong, and stupid. Age of wonders, was great and wonderfull game. It did have great music, atmosphere, alot of different races, and loads of flavour. I do rate it as one of the best, if not best in TBS. It was not deepest, but it was great to play and it had very good MP.

You are judging AI of game which is 10 years old, things were very different back then. And its not even fair, to judge new games based on something what is 10 years old. There is still big community arround it and alot of great mods. It was very good, and I am glad, that there is more TBS coming up.

Also get rid of your huge letters. It looks very immature. If you need bigger text, just increase it for yourself inside your browser.

@willie sanderson:  Most (if not all at this point) web browsers have a zoom feature.  You can either find it in the UI, or you can usually just hold Ctrl and use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out (or + and - on the numpad).  This will allow you to not only read your own posts, but those of others as well.

I made my text big so he could read it. Why my enitre paragraph is a (bad) link, I don't know.

You shouldn't make assumptions about the quality of the game before you (or any reviewers) get their hands on it. Age of Wonders came out a LONG time ago, many of the employees at Triumph Studios are probably completely different, and they have been working on this game for several years now, using modern technology and methods.

I liked AoW but it was lots of diversity in units with little tactical variety for using those units. The whole line of fire thing with archery was brilliant though, as well as massive sieges with 30+ units on each side.

I think the new game is going to change things up a bit, which is nice, but keep the same core elements. My biggest concern is that they will have the same problems that Heroes 6 had, which is 3D models and animations being too expensive to have as many races as previous games. I think thats why they are consolidating races and letting you mix 'n match. TBH I would prefer 5 really well designed factions instead of 12 mediocre ones.

I hope they keep the tactical battle system or at least not change them much. Especially sieges with many units were really exciting.

That's what I miss in FE - tactical battle depth. I know that's not the way Brad envisioned FE, though :-(

What's the difference in MY assumptions and the ones you just blerted out up there? ;) So you have a double standard do you? You can make "ASSUMPTIONS" but nobody else can. Yeah I getcha.

You know others which are usually fanbois I could accept that from but YOU Froggy? How can you be a FAN of that series? It has the worst AI in the history of fantasy games. Now if you really played it a LOT this was easily seen when one really started using the DIPLOMACY system. I could literally wipe the map on EXPERT by making allies with a faction, building up 3 stacks of units and marching them directly to the AI's capitals without one iota of intervention and destroy the capital and wizard inside it.

I'm sorry but myself I cannot like a game for graphics or style or detail the only thing important to ME in a game is CHALLENGE from the AI. If there is no challenge then the entire game sucks. That's not flaming the game that's how I am as a CONSUMER. Believe you me if you didn't work on this AI like you are doing I'd definitely tell you about it and every website I went to that had an interest in fantasty strategy gaming.

So please don't construe an "opinion" into a "flame". I feel very deeply about the Age of Wonders series and my OPINION about it. You see I don't like to waste money on a crappy game, I don't like feeling RIPPED OFF. I'm the CONSUMER it's the developers and publishers OBLIGATION to please ME not the other way around. ;)

No one forced you to buy that game. There are demos I believe, so you could have checked to see if it lived up to your high standards.

But really, complaining about an AI that actually treats you like an ally when you form an alliance with them? That might have been an error by the dev's. In that case you found an exploit; huzzah! But it might just have been intentional, so that when you form an alliance that AI will focus on fighting your enemies, rather than defending itself from it's 'allies'.

@Willie Sanderson Your opinion is worthless because you're comparing a 10 year old title to a state of the art AI. Comment when it has been released and patched for 6 months if you want to "compare" how AI is challenging.

I've bought all AOW games and I've bought FE. I enjoyed them all immensely.

That's why I'm going to buy the FE expansion and the new AOW game. And I will enjoy them both! No sense trying to stop me, OP :)
