Life Shard

Today I was playing with a new, custom made empire.  I had a life shard close to my capitol but it was locked, when I hovered over the shard it showed that my faction can't use it.  So, what I'm wondering, is all about the life shards.. why I can't use it and what I need to beable to build shrines on them.  Thanks!

Empire can only use death shards, Kingdom can only use life shards.  In my experience, they will auto-convert to the kind you can use when they are in your territory and a new turn begins.

They auto-convert? I wish I knew that. Everytime I get a shard of the opposite color, I just immediately raze it to make sure it doesn't fall into the hands of my enemies.

So.... empires = evil and kingdoms = good?  So much for my noble Empire of Gondahar.

That would certainly be one way of viewing things, but it depends on how you play, also, I imagine.

It might be something of a stretch to call some Kingdoms "good" for example.

Meanwhile, everything dies eventually, and a patient and gentle empire could easily be better than any of the kingdoms.

It may also have to do with which continent they nation comes from. Since all the Kingdoms in the East (I think?) Have access to life magic, and all the Empires on the West (Again not 100% sure) have access to death magic. If you couldn't tell Empires were evil take a good look at the tech tree. Empires get things like Black Market, Scions, etc.

While there is a Good/Evil split. Like Dihir said, no one is "good", everyone is bad :P.

What, they auto-convert? So I picked Death Worship for nothing o_O

I truly wish there was a place to find all this info.

Death Worship lets you convert elemental shards to death shards, which can be incredibly powerful.  And the spells it unlocks are also powerful (and dirge gets a nice boost from your death shards).

But perhaps we need an active community of wiki updaters?
