CRASH V1.1 Impossible to save games

Started new game with V1.1 tonight.  Played for about 4 hours.  Great fun.

Then I save the game and exit out.  Now when I try to restore the game, FE crashes.  So I try the two autosaves.  Same deal.

So I reboot - same deal.

I have the err file and the zipped file, but I am not interested in installing dropbox.  Can I simply email the files
?

Just checked - think I know what is going wrong.  Even though I updated to v1.1 before starting the game, the previous saves were saved as v1.02 for some reason.  Now when I start another new game and save it, it says v1.1 on the popup for the save game like it should.  Guess I am screwed.

Maybe you can try re-patching?  I loaded up a 1.02 saved game after the update, new save games read 1.1

However, game still crashes from time to time...

I started a new game after loading 1.1 and the game proceeded to crash about 5 or 6 times.  I was wearing out my power supply!  I have never seen a game so unstable as the [1.1] patch.  The game is virtually unplayable now.

This patch put me mind of an old Gahon Wilson cartoon (about 40 years ago).  There was a scene of some kids selling lemonade at a stand on the corner, with lots of smiling people waiting in line.  The sign on the lemonade stand read [Lemonade  5ยข].  Around the corner, out of sight of the lemonade stand, was another stand.  The people waiting in line were blue & green with mangled bodies etc.  The sign on that stand read  [Lemonade antidote $5.00].

I hope we won't have long to wait for the [1.1 antidote).  I'm sinking fast.  The most consistant thing about 1.1 is that it always crashes - constantly.

One has to wonder what the Devs were thinking.  How could they release such an unstable patch?  My best guess is that they are developing the game on state-of-the-art high-powered machines with tons of graphic power & memory.  I'll bet that they never even tested the patch on a 'normal' computer.

I guess the question has to be, should I wait for the 1.1 antidote, or should I just reload 1.02?

In all honesty, the patch doesn't appear to have a lot of complaints because of instability.  And the devs have been testing the game, and we've been beta'ing it, on both 32-bit and 64-bit WinXP and Win7 systems, with a lot and little RAM, for several months.  This isn't to make light of your complaint, but you might want to focus just on that, without making other assumptions.

I have the same problem, after a crash loading my savegames results in an instant crash.

Maybe my partial solution will help you:

1) Start a new game.

2) From within the new game, load your savegame.

Loading and playing works after that, however as soon as i touch research the research menu in the afflicted savegame, my game crashes again (i can research normally in a new game).

Actually... one of the reason this patch is considered a "major" patch (a .1 step instead of a .01 step), is all the memory optimizations. They are trying to make it even more compatible and friendly to people who don't have high powered machines (and have bigger maps and more stuff for those that do). In fact, they were looking for feedback on those kinds of systems well before the patch was released, checking on performances, etc...

I'm sorry that it's unstable for you (and a few others apparently), but it's not bad at all for the vast majority. There's obviously something going on, but they certainly weren't trying to release an unstable patch, that's just silly. I do have to wonder though, just what is a "normal" computer in your mind? It's almost 2013... my computer wasn't even close to state of the art when I bought it a couple of years ago... and it still handles FE flawlessly.

Having the same issue unfortunatelly.

When I load a game I played yesterday it crashes.

I've been watching the memomy usage. Right after starting to load the game, it skyrocket to 900 MB, then increases steadily and at the point of 1,2 GB it crashes.

I have 8GB available on Win 7 Enterprise, didn't had this problem in latest versions. And I ddin't have this problem certainly with 1.05.

Thanks for the info Glazunov.  As is mentioned, it was just a suspicion.  In a related thread, it was mentioned that using a previously saved 'custom faction' might be causing some instability.  I, also, was using a custom faction (along with the mappack) so I'm going to try to reinstall the game and recreate my custom faction from inside 1.1.

The testing you describe seems just fine, and I am happy to put that suspicion to rest.  I am currently using a 32-bit operating system, but have a 64-bit CPU and lots of RAM.

One interesting crash I had was when I tried to generate a new set-up with Ctrl-N.  After I had done it about 10 times, I got the FE 'white screen of death.'  Don't know if this would have anything to do with a custom faction - but I'll reinstall and hope for the best.

multiple ctrl+N are a sure way to crash the game.

it's a long standing known issue, but it is a low priority bug on the Stardock's list

Do note that they released a custom beta patch yesterday to deal with the save problems. You might want to give it a try if you're having them: https://forums.elementalgame.com/438260

Thanks Kalin, I've just downloaded it.

After reinstalling the game and creating my custom faction again, I still have had some crashes but perhaps not as many as before.  One interesting crash was the white screen of death while I was scrolling through the research tree.  Go figure.

In any event, I'm still optimistic about this game in the near future.
