[Poll] Insta-roads and city snaking

[Poll] Insta-roads and city snaking

With 1.02, a good amount of bugs have been fixed. Forums seems a bit quiet lastly about big issues. I think these two topics seem to have some impact in many players (included myself).

Insta-roads magically appear between own cities when the Trade Tech is researched. They appear too between capitals when a Trade Treaty is made with an AI, and between Outposts and Arcane Monoliths with a later Civ Tech. Players can only build roads with pioneers of a specific faction, and with a hero with Path Of the Governor with the Roadbuilding trait.

City snaking is the possibility of decide where to place buildings when the "auto-placement" setting is off. It allows the player to shape the city to use some features, like free movement, strategic blocking, and expansion in a certain direction to reach resourches or expand Zone of Control. BUT, you can't use it to access to forests or rivers to build lodging camp/pier. Using these features may give some advantadges and some cities maybe look ugly.

Both mechanics are Developer's decisions, and they have stated the reasons to do that way. Anyway, some players find them not pleasant, and have posted opinions at the respect. We know devs read them, and Frogboy is studing a proposal about city snaking (https://forums.stardock.com/436961)

I'd like to know your opinion by answering the next simple question:

- Should developers dedicate some work to improve the mechanics with Insta-roads and city snaking?

1) No. Leave them as they are. Accept it, and stop buggin'.

2) I don't like insta-roads. City snake is ok.

3) I don't like City snake. Insta-roads are ok.

4) I don't like both of them. I would really like they find a better solution.

I'll place here the results.

Thank you for your vote

I think I'll make the calculations this weekend, but untill now, we are not seeing surprises

1, with reservations:

I hope they'll clean up in a way that doesn't take too much work on the game engine or AI code.

* The roads that currently pop up aren't where you want them, and I'd like there to always be a way to add my own to fix them. If I was designing the game from scratch, the current system isn't how I'd do it, but at this point I'd just add 'road building' as a unit trait that everyone has access to.

* I don't much like super-snaking because it emphasizes the inconsistency in using the same map for city buildings and the world map, and because it will effect game balancing of the higher difficulties where it will be used by the min/maxers. Some limit on snaking distance from founding site, perhaps city size plus one, might be better than the current rule.

the way building placing is implemented is silly imo.

I think it should be implemented just like CIV - The single core tile of the city is all that matters, and all the surrounding buildings are just visual effects which don't affect anything

instant appearance of roads is mostly fine to me. Maybe you could have caravans autoplace roads as they go, if that makes more sense.

instaroads are lame, using pioneers would be a lot better

I'll accept it as you vote for option 2 ;)

5. I think city snaking should be accepted by both AI and the ability to grab rivers and logging camps, it doesn't make sense for the logging camp to be in the center of a city rather than at the edge where a forest is. Also, the instant road thing kinda sucks since it'll snake through enemy teritory, should be more 'Avoids controlled teritory' for the trade routes, and I'm sick of guarding an area, just for a Tower to be placed and they get an instant easy access to my teritory even if it's razed.

I'll take it as a vote for option 4

I'd vote for #1 but wouldn't mind if all pioneers could make roads so you could add some if needed.  more flexibility is always better

I was going to post conclusions after finishing the poll, but you have advanced them...

The answer comes from Mods...

With the mod of Parrottmath for city snaking, players that want that feature can use it now.

So a mod for giving roadbuilding to all pioneers would solve the issue concerning the roads. It would be very nice if it had an option to disable insta-roads too, so each player could choose which part to mod.
