Why can't I build certain improvements eventhough the space is there?

I might be missing something, but I am running into something confusing;

In two of my cities I have two single tiles (next to eachother) of free space in my city's range of infuence where certain improvement icons show up when I try to build them, but others (like a School for example) cannot seem to be built, eventhough the space is there aparently?

Or does the School need 4 tiles perhaps? Is the needed tilesize shown somewhere?

Another thing I noticed is that you really need to think about where you are going to place a city. If it's next to other objects, this will cost you space for improvements. Perhaps quite logical, but I had expected available tiles to 'jump over' e.g. emerge on the other side of a river or such.

My Gilden Empire is seriously hampered now. I have three cities, which are all limited by building space. But before I restart I would like to inquire if it's going to be possible to salvage the game.

All input is appreciated.

It's cuz the school is upgrading an existing building... you don't build a new one.

If you are limited by swamps, drain them with "Raise Land".  If you are limited by mountains, get rid of them with "Lower Land"

Gilden usually has Earth magic coming out their ears.  If your custom sovereign does not have it, look for a hero that does, or go make friends with Procipinee, buy a spellbok for a low level hero, and level him up.

Be careful, while you can raise the bottom of ocean tiles, the beaches thus produced seem to be unusable for building (which makes only some sense - sand is only found on the coast, not on the ocean bottom)

If you figure out how to build on former ocean tiles, please let us know.

Oh that is a facepalm moment right there on the upgrade bit!  :|   :P

But why is it shown as a seperate icon in the build menu? Will it only show up if the building that upgrades into it is already present?

About the land features, I am not yet able to raise/lower or drain lands. This seriously hampers my development at the moment.

Thanks for the input!

In order to build on Ocean tiles, you have to raise it twice. Once will turn it into beach, the next will turn it into plains, which you can then build on.

I think all the steps for raise/lower land are:

Ocean->Beach->Plain->Hills->Mountainside->Mountain
