[v1.0] Long delay after ending turn

Please forgive me if this has been asked already... I looked/searched... nothing seems to be relevant to my question.

System Specs: XP with service pack 3, AMD 2.2 ghz, 3gb ram, GeForce GTS250 graphics with 306.23 drivers, steam version of Fallen Enchantress.

OK... sometimes when ending a turn, delay is very reasonable, taking only a few seconds. Then there are times, more often that not, where the delay can take 30 seconds to 1 minute. Rarely, although it has happened, delay can take 2+ minutes.

I am somewhat new to the turn-based strategy games, at least by comparison to many others here, but I don't remember other games taking such a delay. Now, certainly, I can understand when the game is many turns in, multiple cities and enemies on the map... but what I am referring to, is turns 1-15.

Is this to be expected, possibly that I have a misconception of games needing this much time to compute AI moves? Or maybe, it's just that my machine is old and dated to the degree that this is going to be the norm, and I should expect longer delays as the game progresses? I understand that this game has a lot of items to render, but again, this is very early game where next to no map is uncovered. I am really not interested in going to purchase a new computer in order to "see" if it resolves the issues... not to mention, my wife would be a little less than happy with my definition of "needing" a new computer. Any insight or assistance is greatly appreciated.

Maybe I am the only one who is experiencing this slow-down? Well... honestly, I expected to have at least a few people to have a similar experience. I guess my machine is just old and dated. Crud.

I have an older system similar to yours.  When the lag between turns becomes too long I save the game, quit, and reload.  This works every time even though it is a bit of a pain.

I will have to try this... thank you. It just seems weird that this game has that kind of lag between turns. Elemental:WoM doesn't have this heavy of a lag, at least not that I have noticed. If anything, WoM makes me feel at times, that the computer is not spending near enough time on it's moves. Again, thank you.

Did you check this sticky at the top of the support forum?

Actually, I tried this the other day. Sadly, it REALLY monkeyed with my system. I know, it seems like that one entry wouldn't, let alone, couldn't do anything to speak of... but it really messed up my system. Rebooted after making the adjustment to the file it is referencing, the system didn't want to recognize the hard-drives, and when it finally did, it wasn't happy with any of the software that I had installed. Again, really odd.

After I was able to get the computer to boot properly, I immediately went back to the file in question, and took off that one small addition. After rebooting, everything is running fine. One of the most odd things I have ever come across. One stupid entry, and the machine starts throwing up. I do appreciate the thought and suggestion... and I do wish that it had worked. I am just not willing to go back through that again, or worse, have something get messed up that I am unable to repair.

Have a blessed day,

The only problem I've had with the save, quit, reload method of getting rid of IBT lag is occassionally Steam will hang up.  Then you use the old XP standby of Ctl-Alt-Del to kill the FE program, usually second from the top.  XP has some advantages!

The save files show how long you played.  When I start a game it might last 30-40 minutes, occassionally longer, before a reboot.  After that it might be all day, 7-8 hours.  I was playing a game tonight into maybe 6 hours where the IBT was good but the screen drag sucked.  Did the same save and close the program, worked great.

Thank you for this... very helpful advice.

I understand that as the technology side of things continues to improve, more tweaks and improvements are made in each new evolution of an Operating System, but... XP still works fine. Granted, I would really enjoy having a rig that could solve world hunger, end all wars, and do my laundry, while making me a grilled cheese sandwich. The issue I have is that my sad little budget is already eaten up with responsibilities that keep us clothed, fed and living under a roof that doesn't leak. My wife would most likely kick me and the new rig to the backyard, with me having to find a new power source. I guess, with that new rig, at least I could get a grilled cheese whenever I wanted.

If shutting down the game and restarting fixes the problem then you are probably running out of memory and swapping to disk.  if so that will get a considerable improvement with the next patch (because we've fixed memory issues).

If shutting down and restarting doesn't fix the issue then please post your save as I would love to check it out.

ps I would also like a computer that makes me grilled cheese sandwiches
