[1.0] Crystal/Metal cost of armor

7-unit troops with champion's armor cost 231 Crystal. Plate armor - 154 Metal.

7-unit troops with Hellfire/Hailstone Staff cost 42 Crystal and defeat any armor in one shot.

Is 231 Crystal insane cost for the armor? Is the armor worth it?

The metal and crystal cost for troops are all outrageous to me.  It makes fielding more than a handful of armored troops nearly impossible, and they are easily destroyed by a Juggernaut, or magic, or magic staff troops.  I would actually love that you could only field a few troops in steel armor, if they weren't so easily destroyed.

Is it worth it?  I don't think so.  Maybe if you were able to level that unit up a lot, but the cost vs fragility of the unit, not really worth it.

I have never ran out of metal is a game of mine.  I run out of crystal pretty much every game, even after I stopped selling crystal to AIs to finance early wars. But staff units are easily countered by heroes (my tanks all sport 100% resistances) and even with units if you want to design them for a particular resistance.

I have never put champion armor on a troop that actually made it to the frontlines, and to upgrade to it is idiotically expensive, but on paper, they would be awesome with a few levels.

Check out my mod on the armor redux.  I know its not perfect yet, it still needs some polish but I addressed this to a degree by making a crystal armor with the same cost of crystal as metal and champion's armor has a reduced crystal cost but it also now takes metal.

I run out of metal all the time.  But, to be fair, I make a lot of troops that really don't do anything, they just hang around to scare off the AI, as I have fun doing quest in peace and clearing wildlands for fun.

I like to rush for Ironworks, so I pretty much can never run out of metal... but crystal costs tend to hurt. I usually have 2 designs of most troops, a "normal" version that minimizes crystal costs that I use in most places to save crystal... and a final "enchanted" version for my SoD, but even these never use champion armor (main crystal costs comes from accessories).
