[CRASH] game locks up on menu screen

hi all

i just bought the game on steam and i'm having a problem

every time i open the game my pc locks up on the menu screen and i have to do a hard reset

opening the game in window mode i can see that it says that my "graphic driver has stopped responding and has recovered"

i tried updating my graphic drivers\directx

i tried uninstalling\reinstalling and verifying the game cache

i didn't have the beta installed

i have no problems when playing other games

i'm running windows 7 64bit with an ati radeon hd 5850

i sent an email to stardock support but didn't get an answer (yet)
