just how moddable is it?

With the full game being a major disappointment, for me the last chance it has is being completely changeable.

How many things can be modded?

  1. population-based effects
  2. rewiring the whole magic system:
    • spells researched rather than obtained on level-ups
    • magic levels contributing to spell power
    • overland spells needing (variably) several turns to cast
    • a resource governing how much mana can be used per turn
  3.  technology tree

First, let me remind everyone to be polite. If someone's disappointed in the game that doesn't mean you get a free pass at trash talking.

population-based effects

I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but if you want to do things like population adds production, you can do that.

rewiring the whole magic system:

spells researched rather than obtained on level-ups

Yes

magic levels contributing to spell power

Yes

overland spells needing (variably) several turns to cast

This one might be tricky. It works as long as it is your sovereign doing the casting. If you use other units it starts getting messy.

a resource governing how much mana can be used per turn

Yes

 technology tree

Yes

I think the short answer is: the game is very moddable.  There are some great modders around who are working on some exciting things.  Considering the nature of your complaints, you might be interested in Seanw3's mod (I think he calls it Masters Affliction, just look for the thread of the same title in the modding section).

a. and b. described by the OP are features familiar from MoM, a game FE is not.

But as MoM is mostly possible to recreate by modding FE, I guess it's cool.

Personally, Fallen Enchantress as it's own game is great. I didn't expect it to be a sequel to Master of Magic, which I still play too.

"But as MoM is mostly possible to recreate by modding FE, I guess it's cool."

That is of course what I will try to do (a MOM mod), but I'll play a few games first to be familiar with the game.

Larienna,

I am going to put together a diagram of the building tree from Master of Magic using google docs drawing feature. When I am done, would you like me to share the document with you?

For people that are not happy with vanilla, there are mods. Same as any great game, many people just need more challenge or depth or visuals to get their game on. I really suggest trying out Stormworld as Hf has it ready now. It adds some much flair and lore in the areas that people have come to expect from fantasy games.

I already done that ... on a piece of paper. I could make a scan of it. I made other paper documents regarding MOM maybe I could scan them too and place them in my Haunted Archives. MOM for me is a constant field of study, I am always analysing the design of that game ... it's so interesting. If MOM was a science discipline, maybe I would be one of the top 10 MOM scientist |-) . I am also working on a Boardgame version on MOM. I could also call this project a "life quest".

Very cool. if you haven't already, I will do the hero/wizard portraits for you and send them your way. I already have the raw portraits, I just need to re-size them and save them in PNG.

Cool!

I intend to eventually make a Master of Magic Web Site that will probably group everything I'll do or know about MOM. I have the subdomain setup, I just did not have the time to build the website since I did not yet had content to put in it. But eventually, I could put content like this on my web site including Mod, patches, data, links on other sites, etc.

I am currently programming my I Wizardry video game remake called Wizardry Legacy. So no time for other projects.
