[0.991][bug] Why is my familiar in the front line and my melee hero in the back

I my opinion this is the correct set-up for the attack. A familiar is really a secondary troop, which should be in the front. Although, I do understand the concern as most heroes are not at the front line of the battle (that is basically suicide). What I'm trying to say is that the set-up is correct, but not ideal for your play style.

I would hate to find that when you play the game and then your hero in front is attacked and died before his turn, the complaint would be, why wasn't my familiar in front to take the damage and leave my hero alone. It becomes a circle. Instead, I would recommend that you give a clear understanding what you are expecting from the problem. Asking the question is great, but what do you expect them to do instead? How would you do this differently and why? Should it happen this way all the time or in certain cases? What makes putting my melee hero in front better than putting my familiar or summoned creature in front?

Cause right now I don't see a problem with this way and would prefer this to happen.

I've had problems with unarmed units, such as Pioneers and the noblewoman you escort for a quest, appearing in the front with actual armed and armored units in the back :/

Well, if this is for 0.99 or 0.991 then this needs to be fixed.  Do you have any savegames or screenshots of the situation?

parrottmath I don't find you post very helpful, ok I may have made the assumptions with my post.

A familiar is a spell casting unit with no armour and low hp's (starts with 9) that costs the sovereign one permanent hp each time you summon it. Why would you ever want it at the front let alone instead of an armoured  melee focused hero with four times its hp.

The reason I posted this as a bug is that in nearly all the combats I have had since summoning it It has appeared in the front row.

I would like it to appear in the back row like ranged and spell-caster units are meant to.

StevenAus there should be a screen shot in my post.  It appears on my screen.

I know you may have not found my post helpful, but I found the information that you gave here invaluable for the devs. Because I now understand why you would prefer to have the familiar in the back line, and what conditions you would like to see happen. I completely agree with your assessment, but I just didn't quite understand what the familiar does for you in this context.

I apologize if I sounded unhelpful, but I was trying to understand the reasoning you have with your preferred arrangement. I knew the familiar took permanent hitpoints, but I did forget that the familiar is a spell-casting unit more-so than cannon fodder.

I agree, it is almost never better, regardless of play style for the familiar to be up front.  You have to be very careful to keep it alive.  If the sovereign dies... No big deal as long as you win the battle, you only missed out on XP, and the familiar can take your place as a caster.  The noblewoman is a bigger issue, and one I run into a LOT.  That's why I try and pump my party's initiative up, so I can get someone in front of her in the first turn.

Yeah I had the noblewoman appear in the front ranks as well.  She was promptly eviscerated.  It was pretty cool.

This is a more general problem. And it has been an issue for a loooong time.

I mostly have my ranged units in front as well, while the melee is in the back. And i (and others) have posted about this probably a million times. The best would still be to offer a screen where you can costumize deployment for any group, or a deployment priority for each single unit (highest priority is furthest in front and so on) or even a ROLE you can assign to a unit, like "charger"(front priority), "defender"(flanks), "ranged"(behind the chargers, inner side of the group), etc

It is one of the most aggravating bugs or "missing features" that are still in the game.
