I have not met any other factions. Upon researching trading, roads were constructed to unknown lands. Save Game.
Seemingly an enemy faction is sitting with a city/outpost on each side of your empire and researched roads too 
Thats my guess anyways.

It's possible I suppose, but it's very early in the game, and the western road is headed partly through a wildland area.
the auto-roading mechanic does that, and I am not saying I am agreeing it should cross through YOUR territory, just saying this might be the reason.
