I have been downloading every patch and full install for the last 20+ updates. Over the most recent ones I and a quite a few other beta testers have been having a few worrisome problems. I'd like to see some better installation performance before this thing is given to the fickle masses.
1. Download integrity
I would say 1 out of 2 of my downloads gets corrupted. I have a great internet connection. Many other people have noted downloading several times to get the installer to work. This is something that can break a game. The SDC needs a verify cache like steam has. The direct downloads from the store might be harder to fix. I really hope something can get done before release. If the game is great, but installing it is a bitch, we might as well repackage WoM.
2. The no key error
After uninstalling and reinstalling with either the standard uninstaller or iobit's power uninstall, we seem to be having some registry problems. Now, this is far from my area of expertise, but some more knowledgeable devs need to take a look at why the registry is getting messed up. Many players will be updating and need to download and install several times due to the first problem. This kind of thing needs some attention, else the forums be flooded with people that can't even get the game working. And you just know that some people will simply throw the game away if it doesn't even start when they try it for the first time. Not everyone is tech savvy.
3. The need to run as administrator
I and several of my compatriots had a mess of a time getting the game to display trees. This turned out to be due to the game not checking the xml when initializing. Running as admin seems to force a check. This is a problem for mods and really seems like a crappy OS problem more than your guys' fault. But part of living with Windows is dealing with their crap. So why not set up some code that forces a check of the xml on every start? It would save alot of problems for modders.
4. Steam issues
I seem to see a few steam problems on the forums. Not something I can comment on, but it would be a good idea to test out that the steam stuff is indeed working as most all beta testers haven't tried it and can't test it. It's worth mentioning though.
These things are easy to overlook because testers are not that vocal about problems we tend to solve ourselves. Now that a bunch of noobs are coming in to play our game, they will want a better user experience. I hope this stuff is fixable before release. It could be very bad if the new purchasers can't get the game to work on day one. Especially with WoM looking over your shoulder.
