[0.98][The bugs of Shadow world]

I just played a long game with Altar and I got the Shadow world spell. Since this spell is rather special and could be fun, I will make this seperate post about it.

Bugs:

-Even after a portal is destroyed, you pay upkeep for it unless you manually turn it off under enchantments

-Its very hard to know which portal to disenchant if you have more than one and one is destroyed. All you get is some x and y values, but I dont know how to find this on the map.

-The cooldown time in description doesnt (and shouldnt work). It says cooldown 50 in the descpription and that would be horrible if it actually was true.

Issues:

-Its a perfect spell for harvesting exp. Cast it near your best army and level them like never before.

-The beasts does not attack cities ever as far as I have seen, and that reduces the coolness of the spell A LOT. I have seen the demon armies next to cities many times, but they do not touch. Therefore the spell is more of a novelty than a real weapon. Can be used to block a path to your empire mayhaps, by filling a valley with monsters.

Yeah, only ever cast this once and watched in horror as the demons ran around the enemy city I had summoned them by to chase after my nearest army. Guess there's a lesson in that somewhere.

So if you cast it in enemy territory there are three outcomes:

1. It can kill some enemy army and reducing the AI power

2. It is killed by enemy army and gives lots of exp to AI

3. They will run after your army

.. not as fun as if the monsters would actually attack a city....

the maintenance thing is a definite bug, I've got a ticket in for it now.  As for the intelligence of the monsters coming out of the portal, that's more of a general monster AI thing.  As it improves they should get smarter, we generally don't have monsters actively attack cities, however, as it leads to some nasty situations.

Remember, when summoning wild demons they don't always do what you want them to ;)

You guys should update the spell to open 100 demon gates across the realm. I did a little modding and found it to be quite fun on a large scale.

Haha, that's amazing seanw.

Is it possible while modding to give AI creatures a mission?  E.g. have them make a beeline towards and attack the nearest town?

I think that this should definitely be a separate spell... Let the lords of chaos rule.

I dont want to control the monsters, but if they never do anything bad there is little point in the spell. I lost a city to air shrills yesterday. Felt bad and good at the same time as I like to be punished when I dont do my job as a dictator.

I just set the wandering radius to 100. That means they go everywhere and look for roads to travel on. We all know what that means.

In my mod Death Demons are ridiculously overpowered and you spawn five armies from each gate. Times 100 gates means everyone is about to be really dead. I linked it to 3rd book of the magi so you have to do some spell research to get it. I sometimes cast it and then hide on an island for 100 turns.
