Solid as a rock

Solid as a rock

I finally took a break from the first game with .98 updated. I have to say I was quite impressed by the stability of the game. Large map with five normal AI players, all dense settings. I went just over seven hours of time played without a single lock up, crash, or slowdown.

These days that is pretty damn stable. Especially when you look back at EWOM and the earlier betas. That aside most games these days do not run longer than a couple hours before you get some sort of crash, lockup, or forced restart to clear a bug.

Great job, looking forward to more smoth play time.

Sea units and sea combat is overrated, imo.

I like not having to make sure all my cities are built close to the shore so that I can build all the ocean improvements aswell...

At most, waterwalking should be as much as it gets, but flying easily superceeds that, so not much point, imo.

I'd rather see east-west and north-south wrapworld imbeddded into the map generator.

I'm not too excited about the way sea travel is typically done.

I really don't like cities building harbors and then building boats and then having to load troops onto boats.

I also don't like units turning into boats to cross the water.  There has to be a better way.

I actully like that myself. Both the loading troops and the Troops turning into weak ships to cross water. Bring in another element into the game which I personally like.

Much more elegant solutions for FE have been proposed.

Agreed, sea travel would only help this make more sense.

I would way prefer to have flying units instead of seaborne units. If you think about it, it doesn't really make sense to bother building boats and traveling across the oceans unless the land is already fully exploited. Since the point of FE is that you start on a ravaged land and rebuild everything, it seems silly to spend resources on naval yards. Having fishing boats and things like that is useful of course, but I think the river buildings we have now cover that.

With flying units you get a similar experience to naval units in terms of different movement patterns, except flying is universally useful. It integrates with ground units and doesn't require new AI or infrastructure. It would also put more emphasis on getting ranged attacks assuming that ground units can't attack air units (or maybe give 30 dodge versus melee for the factions that have no ranged attacks).

I meant flying in tactical battle could be really useful. Flying over mountains is not a big deal... they need to put in more stuff to make flying important. Islands with cool stuff could work... as well as cloud castles.
