Edit custom Character / Faction?

You can't edit made factions or sovereigns, only create new ones.
On the "Who are you?" screen, choose "create character".
On the "Create Sovereign" screen, choose the faction you would like to play. The Kingdom races will allow you to cast life spells and the Empire factions will allow you to cast death spells. I'm guessing you wanted to know about the life/death thingy.
