Good catch. I've seen that in previous iterations as well, though lately I've been playing with Altarian enchanters and just giving my mage henchmen the actual books.
Have seen that several times for Bard/Shieldman/related characters when they level up and start unlocking advanced spells. (Elemental Attack Spells)(Altarian race)
[Another funny detail I've noticed: (Not really a bug I dont think, but related) When Bard/Shieldman/related characters are placed in an army, "Shieldman's Army" or "Bard's Army" always makes me chuckle. Not sure if there is a way to rename them seeing as how they seem to be considered heroes, but it would be nice.]
