I am liking Beta 0.952

I have to admit i am really liking beta 0.952.  I have not had as much fun since  beta 0.912.

It is now really starting to feel like the game I have been dreaming of.

I would like to throw a little encouragement at the FE development team, I think you are definitely on track, please keep up the good work.

Signed: A Stardock employee...........not.

Seconded. I am loving Beta 0.952.

On the one hand, I think you guys have created the best game of the genre, and an instant classic among turn based strategy games. As a player of classic MOM, FE is VASTLY better already, and continues to improve.

On the other hand, please keep the bug fixes, new features, balance improvements, and ai improvements coming! I don't think it's possible to make *too good* a game. Unless it is like that joke, where the german army comes up with a joke so great that it kills. I don't remember how it goes. I guess what I'm saying is that if you make a game so good that it *may* kill you. I'd play it. I think you guys are almost there.

Also a shoutout to seanw3 and heavenfall specifically for their great feedback on the game. You guys have my proxy vote on all suggested improvements.

It still suffers from the "bloated database" syndrome.. let the game run long enough (a large epic game for example, forget about getting that done even halfway through, or even a medium epic game).. it just keels over and dies at some point (program stops responding).

But yes, it is quite entertaining to play now :)

I haven't had a single CTD in the current beta - solid. Only hassle has been an inactive "turn" button. Bring on beta 5 :)

I have put in more hour of quality game time in FE than I have in Civ 4 and 5 combined.

Bloated database or memory leak, I remember GalCiv II being plagued with this problem, and it seem to elude the programmers for ages,  I think they fixed it in the end, not to sure.  I hope they catch it quick in FE, otherwise it means you can never have a maxed out game without restarting every 5 moves.

Playing an epic game as Magnar on Expert... Brad sent his Storm Dragon my way about 100 turns in, I panicked and was like wtf... Magnar is uber fire mage but no mana then I realized I could spam slave militias and sacrifice for the mana. Fire nuked that dragon out of there. Game changer for the specific set of circumstances I was under. Fun factor 10!

yeah, i dont know what it is thats causing it (hopefully Stardock knows.. if not the game is de facto unplayable for anything other than quick skirmishes).

My memory usage does not appear to increase over the course of a game, which is why i suspect a database issue. Letting a game run long enough, there willl be a large number of database entries to keep track of all the units and their stats, the various buildings, and so on. Then at some point the game just says "thats it, i've had enough", and locks up. Maybe the database comes to a critical point where it starts to corrupt or something.. i have no idea. All i know is that something is seriously wrong with the engine or underlying mechanics, hehe

Crossing fingers for them to fix it quickly though.. i read in a different thread that release was in a month ?

I have started getting crashes in tactical combat, and have reported them.

Apart from that I mostly like 0952. The biggest problem now is that the world is too tame for me. There is no risk to expansion anymore. You dont have to fight the wild to expand, just slap some mites and wolves.

I've been around since Sep '10 and to me the engine has slowly but surely gotten better. With that said, it does seem to still be unstable the longer the game or larger the map. I'm hoping once they feature lock, fine tuning the engine and memory management will follow. Here's to hoping!

To reinforce the OP, I am loving 0.952, and I am happy to report that:

1. the tactical battle slowdowns that I was frequently experiencing while playing 0.951 have yet to appear in 0.952...

2. I LOVE the new method of indicating which units have moves left (the green border around their icon)

Now if only they provide a UI button to zoom to the map spot where one of your resources is destroyed, my three main issues will have been solved :)

For once, playing on 'beginner' difficulty, really feels like a beginners difficulty, so I am very pleased about that.  If I want to up the pace I can easily alter my difficulty settings.  Before, playing on beginner, felt more to me like playing on nightmare mode.   :\

I know they still have much ahead of them before they can declare the game a finished game, but if beta 0.952 is any indication of how the game will blossom, I believe they are going to be on one hell of a winner, a classic even, maybe.

I seem to recall that they changed the default difficulty from "normal" to "easy" - have you accounted for that?

I play on Hard with Dense monsters. I would expect the world to be dangerous on those settings.

I think it's time you came clean and admitted to yourself that you are just to good for this game.  It holds no challenge, you are a triple ace gamer with nerves of steal and the reactions of a flash back water viper.  :D
