newbie question - how to open gate bound with magic

I'm in the late game and tyring to open aa gate 'bound with magic'. There was some text at the start of the game when I first passed this gate but now I see no way to rediscover the quest objective for opening the gate. There is one active quest: Defeat waeloga the dragonlord; but nothing happens when I click that to get a description or hint (not sure if it is related to the gate).

in the quest you go to the darkling town that popped up, fight a battle, then go to the temple that pops up, then go back to the first gate open the first gate with magic phrase, go in to the second gate, get a troop injured at gate2, then go to new temple that pops up, get hammer of doom (+50 attack),  go back to gate2 bash gate2 down, then have megabattle to end game(before this step make sure you have all the best armour on al of your army that attacks and a large number of range attack, and the melee attack members of the army have the healing and defence accessories and spells applied (several ashwake dragons in the battle),if you lose then the mob that you attacked will be let loose in the world, if you win then GAME OVER.

How do I find the darkling town and temple? The entire map has been explored; I've conqured all opponents; 'cept one town to leave the game running and I simply cannot find darkling town (though I probably already killed it) or the temple. Could I be blind or could it be  a bug ?

the darkling town pops up after a visit to the darkling temple(a yellow quest location) and it is one of the yellow quest locations.

depending upon your faction colour it might be hard to see, but you can use the mouse cursor to find the locations.

Clicking on the quest icon should zoom to the location. If it's not try zooming in first.

Sorry there is a quest icon; when I click on it nothing happens. I think the quest is broken.

you have to move a hero/sov unit to the location to get the next step in the quest.

I did move them to the gate; and I stood on the gate... and click the quest icon and nothing happens. I am a newbie; but I did manage to complete every other quest in the game.... so i'm not 100% dense.

Btw I am willing to send a save game to someone familiar with the quest if they want to check what is going on.
