Custom Sovereign traits

Hi there, Wanted to make a post about the balance in the custom stuff, but wanted to probe people first to ask what they prefer, so if have created a custom sovereign yet, (0.951) what traits did you take, background, weakness, and gear (and faction of course).

And how well did it work to your expectations, if you made a custom faction, please include about the same information for the faction :D

Ill start with my own custom sovereign

Faction: Pariden
Magic:
Water level 2

Traits:
Brilliant
Hardy
Might
Scholar

Weakness:
Clumsy

Weapon: Short Sword

This was a hero intended to go both the mage way or warrior way, depending on playstyle, I think I should have picked air magic instead of water (Though water gave meditation, and thats really nice for all-out mages).
Also picked another weakness than clumsy, though I actually did laugh when I forgot and hit my other units with my sovereign :D

Edit: Also scholar doesn't seem to work
nevermind, it was the old pariden that had a faction +10% bonus to research :P silly me

Sincerely
~ Kongdej

My custom Capitar sovereign is actually quite similar to your Pariden one:

Diplomat

Water 1
Life 1

Brilliant
Scholar
Wealthy

Cowardly

Rusty short sword

The idea is that he's an academic and a diplomat but not much of a fighter, and in battle functions as a supporting caster/buffer. In previous versions he (with slightly different skills) would take Path of the Governor for the instant prestige bonus, but I'm more likely now to give him the path of the Mage or Defender - probably the latter for all the army buffs. He gets better in combat as he levels - not only does Cowardly stop coming into play as often, but also when it does apply his Mancer Blood counteracts it. I do have to luck out with my starting hero a little - once I got one who was also Cowardly, which was a disaster as soon as I had to face any monsters tougher than wolves or mites.

Earlier versions of this character had both Wealthy and Natural Leader, but that was kind of overkill and I decided that Wealthy was more fitting. Diplomat and Legacy of Serrane go really well together, as the extra influence generated by caravans means I can cast Silver Tongue more often, with enemy cavalry and mages being priority targets, or the Knights of Asok if they spawn. I go heavily into civics while relying on heroes and subverted units for my military strength, and then switch to warfare so I can start training my own knights, taking advantage of the Capitar warhorse,

My custom Umber sovereign has varied more over time - she sometimes is a bow user, sometimes spear, for example, and sometimes uses Death magic, but the constants are Hardy, Might, Tactician and Air 1. She's a straight up military leader who usually goes Path of the Assassin, and once single-handedly took down Vetrar. Well, she had an army at the start of the battle, but by the middle it was single-handed. So it counts.

For the other factions I tend to use the default sovereigns as I have been trying to play a successful game with each - I have not yet succeeded in this.

I play as Pariden

I take only Life magic as this is the one you cant buy a tome for it later, that free enchantments circlet and rest as nonmagic school traits.

Seems to work well.

Just cobbled together a leveling demon after my Altaran game ended at Level 30 to see how far I could go if I tried.

Marigold the Peasant - Altar

Altarian Blood

General

Air Apprentice

Life Apprentice (it was either this or Earth)

Natural Leader

Hardy

Brilliant

Cowardly

Using the ever versatile/useful Rusty Shortsword. Need to start her up but this'll probably suit my playstyle better than the utterly wasted Fire Apprentice on Lord Relias. If somebody wants to take her offensive magic she can attempt it with some focus on Air Magic's offensive spells later on, and she'll have the spell mastery bonus from Brilliant to help out there while being able to take hits thanks to Hardy. She starts with a total bonus of +45% experience (+10 racial, +25 army xp from General, +10 from Brilliant) making her Cowardly disadvantage vanish quickly. Raise Air to Disciple and you'll be adding +25% more due to Tutelage. Might decide to switch out Natural Leader for it at the start just so I can begin the game with +70% to experience gains and rely on trade for my gilder to purchase champions.

a big cheesy custom build that worked out great .950

The idea is to give me the best benefits I can early game for an insurmountable lead w/o caring about late game or too much about mid game

Custom Race:

(Amarian Blood)           {tarth blood would have been a better pick, for the huge early game bonuses}
Adepts                         (I wanted the extra mana at the start, not sure I'd pick again)
Betrayers                     (for synergy.... w/Natural leader)
Binding                        (free good units early game right when I need them)
Heroic                          (not sure I'd pick again- as prestige and pop growth aren't as important anymore)
Master Scouts               (awesome power, lets my overpowered hero move freely)
Masterwork Chainmail    (I think plate is too heavy)
Scholars                       (for free slight bonus when paired with uneducated)

{might sub in quick if I were to do it again}

Weaknesses:             (none of which hurt early game)
No Armor                   (Never really buy anything past leather anyways)
No Ranged Weapons  (there are no early game ranged units)
Uneducated               (no reason not to pick this As you can also pick Scholars and pick up a free tech)
Vulerable to Magic      (weakest penalty ever)

Custom Hero:
Weakness:
Vulnerable to magic

Talents:
Natural Leader (for pairing with Betrayers)
Might

Equipment
Crown (for all the buffs I will give my sovereign)
long sword (universal best 1st weapon pick)

Magic (picked with the crown in mind)
Air 1 (haste, evade is a nice bonus)
Earth 2 (stone skin, & enchanted hammers)
Life 1 (regeneration)
thought I'd miss slow with water but didn't really miss it that much.

Profession:
General

better than adventurer imho bc getting to lvl 2 is easy its the higher ones that are harder, and still early game
