FE 0.951 High Priority Bug Fixes

Hi guys,

We plan to release a 0.952 before heading to Beta 5.  Beta 5 will be purely about bug fixing and polish but we do have a number of significant bugs on our list that we plan to address prior to leaving Beta 4.

Here are a few selected ones that I've seen others report that are type 0 (prevent playing of the game).

1. Missing unit display in the sovereign screen and other areas.  This is a video card issue but we have worked around it in 0.951. Turn off anti-aliasing in the settings and it should work. Make sure you update your drivers.

2. Slow down in tactical battles.  This has not yet been fixed but we know what causes it. It's high on our list to fix. It is caused by a model leak in the terrain that causes each rendering to take longer and longer. We expect to have this fixed before we leave Beta 4.

3. Crashes (in general). These are an ongoing thing.  As we improve performance in the game, we expose bugswith the multicore engine we've developed. The more cores your system has, the faster Fallen Enchantress runs. Compare the end turn perf of FE to any other strategy game of similar scope and you can see the benefits (there's no "please wait" screen in FE)  However, if multiple threads are modifying a piece of memory at the same time, it will crash the game. This is a bug on our part for not correctly making a copy of the vector that was being modified. There aren't many of these bugs but they're in there.

4. Save game corruption. This should be fixed in 0.951. If you run into any problems, let us know.

All other bugs would fall under "need to fix in beta 5" such as balance or stupid AI tricks or stupid animation bugs.  However, if you are experiencing something NOT on the above list that is detrimental to the game functioning, post here.

As a reminder, the key bits of information we need are:

1. What OS you are running.

2. What video card you are using.

If you can share with us any other data, such as debug.err or a saved game (saved games are really helpful in balancing things btw), please share them with us.

I started playing the game last night and while I enjoy (there are interface issues that I think need to be addressed) i've also hit quite a few bugs that cause crashes. Unfortunately i can't really tell if they are on your list; a good chunk of the bugs seems to occur when I load a game.

 

1) it will sometime simply crash; if I then rerun the game i can correctly load it (perhaps latent memory corruption or some sort of race condition)

2) Once I clicked somewhere and it (you guessed) crashed; unfortunately i cannot reproduce this one (there is an interface issue where I go into the trade menu; when I exit it then registers a latent click); btw I wish the trade window allowed you to use items that would stream line needing the equip gui.

3) Sometime elements will vanish when loading a game (it'll stop highlighitng the active player in combat for example)

4) crash once when entering combat (again can't reproduce)

System is sandybridge with I5 (2500k); and windows 7 64 bit; very stable 'cept with FE :)

I think I had about 8 crashes in 4 hours of play last night and this morning.

Not really related but interface issues include:

trade screen/equip screen - why can't i just do everything in the same screen

can't find an easy way to remove trips from a city when garrisoned there.

funky behavior when I want to group/ungroup

newbie stuff - can't find any champions to recruite :( I like champions; big armies !

Btw bit confused by your comment about copying vectors; don't you use mutex around them; or is the granularity to fine that it is cheaper to copy then mutex ?

I had this problem - black empty portraits instead of unit displays and black backgrounds and foregrounds in the soc selection screen -I found out this was down to my laptop assigning the basic graphics card to work with elemental as opposed to the gaming graphics card - when I entered the card menu and manually assigned it to run with elemental, the game displays were fine - I don't know if you've tried that already but it might be worth a shot

One suggestion: There are newer drivers for that card. Mine are substantially newer (I needed them to get KOTOR to work).

will need to wait for darkehound reply on this, cause I have some nonumbered internal intel card. and my drivers are from end of the June. I'm pretty sure they are the current ones. 

Two more notes. the game worked correctly in this area around 0.85. it stopped working after the patch, and afterwards when I migrated from win xp to win 7 it continued to be buggy. Secondary I do see the models in unit design, while I don't in other windows. My guess is that it is environment independent and it is not dependant on low level 3d models display code. It is a result of some code checked in, during last 3 months or so, related to UI.

that's about all the situation I can think off that the 3d models appear, apart of normal game on the strategic/tactical maps where they work without problems.

 

ultimately a brand fresh debug.err from the latest crash (I had to run a program with admins priviledges, (you know run as administrator), the screen flipped for a second). when I alt tabbed back to the game it freezed again, so you can confirm the video card specs.

Hey, same problem here, already tried updating drivers and turning off antialiasing. I uploaded some pictures that show how it looks in the game and that in some instances the unit display works correctly.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500/5100 Series

Operating System is Win7 Professional 64bit SP1 on a Lenovo Thinkpad Duo CPU 2,1 GHz, 4 GB RAM

by the way, there nearby this drake, is a pariden city and a pack of crystal lizards (forgot the name). both were within pariden borders for some 30 turns. The lizards were even mobile, tracking me by the look of it, but never bothered with the outpost or the pariden city.

there is one more thing, if you have auto-turns, the drake will attack you after you load the save and end current turn. That's because, you need to level up city, accept research and click on Relias, or press tab. If you have the auto turns disabled, you'll be able to escape. 

that's at least inconsistent.

Someone found a loophole for changing equipment and while you can do it, it doesn't work correctly HOWEVER, you can purchase items from your store or trade items (like healing items) which DO appear the following turn for the hero in tactical battle.

I would love to have this addressed so that we CAN change weapons in combat and it appears that all that is needed to be done is to refresh the hero's equipment list after the change (I'm sure it's more than that). But buying from the store and trading should definately be turned off.

Yep, looks like you're having the same issues that I was having and they started around the same time too - I suggest you manually check which graphics card the game is using, I'd still be having the same issue now if I hadnt stumbled upon a solution

I just had the same issue with the graphics. I've never had the problem before. I did start a game, played a few turns and then hit ctrl-N. The issue appeared after that. Not sure if the two are related. I restarted the program and started a new game and have not seen the issue again.

got one also. strangely it was the first battle after reload. The only thing that differed was that I switched to cloth map only after first turn.

Frogboy, one more thing, please check if you can do anything about those lockdowns. 

I just got a baby born (well some two months ago). I try to give a turn or two during the feeding, but as often as not, my wife calls me to do something more valuable. when I go back, the laptop is locked. game frozen. I have autosaves set on 1 turn. but if there was a tactical battle that cannot be autoresolved on any given turn, I sometimes have to fight it over ten times.

 

and that's not mentioning hibernations, changing users on shared machines, starting up anything that require admin priviledges.

The fact that I never once found Procipinee leveled as a mage shouldn't be considered a bug? I find the choices the AI make while leveling its heroes and sovereigns weird, to say the least.

They always get path of warriopr as a bonus, and take path of assassin on level 3. sometime they get a path of mage on level 5.

just this game I'm playtesting 0.951 I'm seeing Magnar level 4 with path of warrior and assassin. I also see him having leather greaves and sword. I bet he has a dozen more of the greaves, and he probably won't share them with his champion who runs with his spear only

EDIT: at least no change in sovereign on the starting new game and while trying to view monsters/champions in game. design work like previously.

Try this:

Run the game from a command line with this parameter:

I believe that the change is in the backgrounds. they weren't in the build I was seeing them last.
