FE 0.951 High Priority Bug Fixes

Hi guys,

We plan to release a 0.952 before heading to Beta 5.  Beta 5 will be purely about bug fixing and polish but we do have a number of significant bugs on our list that we plan to address prior to leaving Beta 4.

Here are a few selected ones that I've seen others report that are type 0 (prevent playing of the game).

1. Missing unit display in the sovereign screen and other areas.  This is a video card issue but we have worked around it in 0.951. Turn off anti-aliasing in the settings and it should work. Make sure you update your drivers.

2. Slow down in tactical battles.  This has not yet been fixed but we know what causes it. It's high on our list to fix. It is caused by a model leak in the terrain that causes each rendering to take longer and longer. We expect to have this fixed before we leave Beta 4.

3. Crashes (in general). These are an ongoing thing.  As we improve performance in the game, we expose bugswith the multicore engine we've developed. The more cores your system has, the faster Fallen Enchantress runs. Compare the end turn perf of FE to any other strategy game of similar scope and you can see the benefits (there's no "please wait" screen in FE)  However, if multiple threads are modifying a piece of memory at the same time, it will crash the game. This is a bug on our part for not correctly making a copy of the vector that was being modified. There aren't many of these bugs but they're in there.

4. Save game corruption. This should be fixed in 0.951. If you run into any problems, let us know.

All other bugs would fall under "need to fix in beta 5" such as balance or stupid AI tricks or stupid animation bugs.  However, if you are experiencing something NOT on the above list that is detrimental to the game functioning, post here.

As a reminder, the key bits of information we need are:

1. What OS you are running.

2. What video card you are using.

If you can share with us any other data, such as debug.err or a saved game (saved games are really helpful in balancing things btw), please share them with us.

I highly recommend using DropBox. If you don't already have it, you can get it here.

Hm can't help but read this, standing out from the rest of the sentence, you want savegames of non-bugged games too? O_o

Thanks for giving this bug list!!
This will make me stop posting Debugs for the slowdown in tactical battles (I figure if you have more, you got more debugs to see more narrowly what the problem is).

Yea, saved games are what made Galactic Civilizations II so good. It let us see how real people were playing the game.

Plus, I just like loading them up to see how the AI is doing.

Are my modded games completely irrelevant then? Perhaps how people are modding the game is a relevant way to see what is frustrating them about the current mechanics?   ^_^

Modded games wouldn't be relevant yet.

Hi Brad when you say you want saved games, at what stage of completion do you want us to send them to you? Do You want early game, mid, or late? Do you want a series of saves for the same game at different stages?

I'll take a "yet" any day. For now I suppose I will put the vanilla files back in and start testing the AI in my LP videos. I'll even save the saves every 50 turns so you can pick which part of the video you want to play and test things yourself. It will be like time travel.

WOOT.......since i know you are gonna come back to this thread...thanks supremely for the no---waiting screens.

One of the HUGE problems i had with CIV 5 is the absurdly ridiculous underwhelming may grabthor poop on their heads loading screens....We could program and run a mission to mars before civ5 would actually start...what the hell is that program loading?

thanks again frogboy

Save game corruption should be fixed! Hurray.

I haven't been able to do meaningful feedback since I could only play against one opponent safely.

Will let you know!

I just started a thread, I saw an AI faction with a city built on top of a Magic Shard. This must be a bug.

Also, I don't know what is causing it but this happened in .95 for me and just happened now when I alt-tabbed out. Seems to only happen when alt-tabbing and not always, just sometimes. I go to the options screen when I alt tab out, when I go back into the game, it is frozen at the options screen, can't do anything. No choice but to ctr-alt-delete- end program.

Outpost feature - Warden doesn't appear to work, work as described or works in some way we don't understand....

Want to know this too, if no answers come you'll see my loaded games with graphs, 5 different saves throughout the gameplay, and some screen-shots... ^_^... (Well meaby not, but before I spam too many save-games off the same save, it'll be nice to know.

I must say I am not too familiar with the AI changes yet, so I'm still excited to see how much it can whoop my behind :)

Still no good. Antialiasing off.

I can see them durign unit design and level advance. I don't see them on sovereing selection and monster preview.

What can I do?

small issue I found when playing with a monitor attached - it seems, that when loading in a window there is a loading screen. on my default configuration (ie. laptop screen), the loading is blank screen.

Also locking the laptop is still freezing the game.

For comparison, I've played Civ V yesterday and hibernated the machine for the night. When I opened it today, it just worked.

I had a faction offer a trade of 53 civilization for 53 civilization...  bug...  which I declined.. and moments later it offered it again... bug...

That's actually a legit trade - you would both gain those 53 points of research and add them to a (random?) tech, so you both benefit. But the thing with them coming back again the next turn, and the next, with the same offer is definitely a weirdness and sometimes an annoyance.

I think the bug there might be that the UI for tech trading isn't clear.  Making an even trade for techs is a valid offer (It's not the same as trading 53 gold for 53 gold as neither party is giving up anything) but it's not clear from the interface how that trade works.

I wouldn't be surprised if the AI keeps offering the same trade turn after turn because it can tell which techs are being traded.  Maybe from its perspective, the trade it offers each turn is different (the points will go into a different tech), but there's no UI for the player to figure that out.

Or it could just be that the conditions for an AI trade don't take into account how recently a similar trade was rejected by the player.

We need to know ore about your system.

I tend to take the view that if ONE person is reporting it, a 1000 people are experiencing it.  So I'm willing to go out and get the exact hardware you have to reproduce it here.

Video card, OS are the two key things. And do you have the latest drivers?

Frogboy, I am still the same person, that you responded to this thread https://forums.elementalgame.com/429405

you got full debug.err from 0.95.

nothing has changed, it's a pretty standard, current technology non-gaming rig.

and this are data from darkehound's rig (same thread, debug.err still available on paste bin) who had also reported it, making us 2000 of people by your count.

That does't make sense.  That's MY video card (I have the 6950 but still).

Do you have a screenshot of what you do see?

One suggestion: There are newer drivers for that card. Mine are substantially newer (I needed them to get KOTOR to work).

Never understood why you modders were modding the game in beta. Isn't the whole point of the beta to iron out the issues of the vanilla game first? I can understand having a late beta phase where you want modders to test the modding tools.

Mostly it is just practice. Also, I like to do some of my own ironing.
