What determines Grain/Material/Essence distribution on a tile

Title says everything. Wondering how this is influenced. Is it random? Dependent on surrounding tiles?

Also has anyone one seen a tile with more than 2 essence? Seems Grain and Material can go up to 5 but never seen essence beyond 2.

Thanks

I've never seen essence beyond 2. I have had a looonnnnggg stetch of 'cntl-N' where I didn't get any essence at all....that was really annoying.

Most production I've seen is 5...least is 2.

Most food I've seen is 4...least is 2.

I'm not exactly sure how it happened but in my current game I've got a Conclave with Essence 4. The funny thing is, I swear it was only Essence 2 when I built the city, and then it seemed to increase immediately or sometime shortly after I built it to 3. Last Essence came from Oracle improvement on level-up later on.

Yes, if you get the Oracle improvement you can boost essence by 2 in a Conclave (with the other building that boosts essence by 1).  And yes, it is possible to get essence values of 3 - I had a 4/3/3 square (pretty sure) next to an air shard and farm-type improvement.  You can tell it was made a Conclave. ;)

PS: Isn't it cool that the level-up buildings are built automatically at level-up now in Beta 4, rather than being a bonus to have to build yourself? =)

Tile yields are determined by a number of factors. (Note that none of this really "matters", what matters in-game is the numbers you see on a single tile. This is more for those interested in what goes on behind the calculation.)

First, they must be the right "environment" - green or fallen. If they are just barren or any of the other types, it doesn't give ANY yields.

Second, the type of terrain that surrounds the tile determines what the yields are. They are gathered from the central tile and all surrounding tiles (effectively a 3x3 grid). Plains give food, forests give materials. Rivers give both.

Third, random spawn of world resources also determine tile yields. Some world resources boost the value of surrounding tiles. Iron ore gives materials, for example. Essence comes from a large variety of world resources - the most common is shards and crystal mines. But they also come from recruitable monster resources.

There are also other factors. For example if there is a nearby city the tile will not produce any yield. A tile must also have at least 2 materials or it will not appear. A tile must also have at least 6 combined material+essence+grain or it will not appear (that may be material+grain =>6 I'm not sure if essence is counted into the combined value).

I have no other building which boosts Essence. Also, Location Yield shows Essence +3.
