Seanw3's Let's Play Beta 4 [.95]

Seanw3's Let's Play Beta 4 [.95]

I have been working on some new videos of the new beta. This time around the focus in the early game is centered on character development instead of grand strategy. I love it, but some may not understand how to manage the early game now that it is different. The change is subtle, but now exploration is the key to success. You have to go out into the wastes and find resources, take on quests. Kill what you can and run from anything you can't is a good rule of thumb. The video starts a few turns in after I had the presence of mind to start recording. What you may have missed is me finding my early heroes and wiping out some easy baddies. I explored a little, soloing my two heroes with great care. When the video starts I have found the limits of that strategy and regroup in order to take on harder monsters. You will notice that my city seems to take care of itself. There is not alot of micromanagement in the early game, just some really important choices.

Currently, there is no indication that there actually is a "map generator", it simply puts stamps together as a puzzle. You also cannot increase or decrease the amount of stamps on a particular map type - they are weights.

I meant generation in the sense that it generates a map out of stamps.

What does this do?

<TinySeedSpawns>2</TinySeedSpawns>
<SmallSeedSpawns>2</SmallSeedSpawns>
<MediumSeedSpawns>0</MediumSeedSpawns>
<LargeSeedSpawns>0</LargeSeedSpawns>

I assumed that decides the ratio of different stamps used. I also wonder how it is able to give me 10% ocean on a map. It seems like an odd way to define the size of the land.

Sean, what level of difficulty are your opponents playing on?  You make good decisions in the videos, but you still slip behind all four of them, and it looked as though Tarth in particular had it easier.

I play on Harder. Before I was playing on Challenging in the initial beta 4 series. Now that I have modded things a bit, I made my own difficulty. It is somewhere between Hard and Expert. Basically I give the AI total sight over the whole map. They get a 15% bonus to gildar. Their Sovereign gets a 30% boost to Hp. That might not seem like much, but it really changes things past turn 200. Tarth in particular has a huge economic advantage in the first game I played as they are not shy about settling everywhere with their masterscouts ability.

When I play Tarth, I generally expand slowly but explore thoroughly. AI Tarth's biggest mistake is always expanding without being able to defend what they stake. I never like to have more than three choke points to defend. Can't wait for the AI to figure that out.

Just curious but how do you mod or edit the difficulty? I would love to adjust a few things!

I think that, just possibly, Sean was being droll in his comment about the "current economic situation," above.

Because it's not totally obvious Trojasmic was joking along with him?

Every time I see you post these vids, I wish I had the environment to post my own xD

Thanks again for putting your time into this Sean, opinions aside, these kind of vids was some of what made me come to these forums :D

Sincerely

I like to hear myself talk so much I figured some of it might be useful. :)  Thinking about an audience watching also helps prevent me from modding in my own preferred balance, fixing my own bugs and waiting for new releases. I hope some of my videos give the devs a different perspective about the game. I wish every beta game was recorded and sent to Stardockia.

Very nice Sean. I didn't sit out the complete last episode though ;) Better army composition is really needed for the AI, looking at those ganes. I'll post my end game suggestions when I finally get the opportunity to finish my game.

I gave up on that last game. Getting an early surrender makes things too easy.

My next series will be a modded version again. I will play as Pariden, now the most magical race of them all.

I just watched the Resoln video. There were no monsters threatening at all. The world has gone to sleep as users have complained about being beaten up. The frog has nerfed them totally.

You mean, when Trojasmic launches into some criticism of one US major party presidential candidate, and a statement of support for the other?  Without any evidence of parody, satire, lampooning, or burlesque?  No, no it isn't.

I assume your changes to Pariden are in your Balance mod.  I think I may switch over to your version, although Brad will likely Lloyd's Beacon to my home, mace my head, and beacon back.  Very well thought out stuff, in my opinion.  Just FYI: the game musical volume seems louder against your voice in your Pariden video.

EDIT: Staff of Souls.  Nice option for an early game, helps make Pariden less of a wimp at that point.  And your powerful enhancements to other rulers helps balance things out.

I forgot to do a sound check before recording.   o_O

Too bad, I cannot listen to this last one.... The crackling in the sound is painful.

Yeah, what I do is export the audio to audacity and then do noise cancellation with any background static. Its a little bit easier if you record your voice separately.

I may have missed it, but did you ever track down why the AI was so successful at bashing with its units?  It seemed excessive.
